LA guy to save all his trash in 2008
Looks like LA has our very own trash hoarder now. Just like Ari Derfel in Berkeley who saved all his trash last year, LA resident Dave Chameides has vowed to stash all his trash in his basement this year (via LAist).
Similarities between Ari and Dave: Both are saving both the recyclables AND non-recyclables, both have composting set ups set up (this seems to be de rigeur before starting any sort of trash hoarding project), and both are trying to reduce their overall trash.
Differences: While Ari started his blog AFTER he completed his year of hoarding, Dave's started his blog, 365 Days of Trash, at the beginning, not only documenting his progress but also researching "a whole mess of questions": where trash goes, how it gets recycled, what happens to the stuff, and the like. The info, Dave says in an NPR interview, will be a help to others who want to live more sustainably.
Another difference: Dave's married with two kids, so he'll have a little more trouble figuring out what trash is "his" versus that of his family members. On the other hand, I'm guessing it'll be easier for he and his wife to work out a less trash-intensive birth control method than condoms.... because it seems Ari saved his used ones, as he hints at in the end of this CNN interview.
