Eco work break: One Square Foot
Save the rain forests by answering trivia! Two guys in Missouri put together a Web-based trivia game called One Square Foot and slapped Google ads on the bottom of the page. Some of the ad revenue will go toward buying land trusts that will preserve the rain forest. (via Treehugger)
Every four correct questions means one square foot of rainforest conserved, though the details are a bit fuzzy. Because the creators are using some of the proceeds to fund the server and develop the site, I'm not sure what percentage of the total ad revenue will go toward rain forest preservation.
I also don't understand how they worked out the "4 correct = 1 sq. ft." figure, because the same ads run at the bottom regardless of whether you get a question right or wrong. Perhaps they've averaged out the odds? So far, no square foot of rain forest has been bought, because an acre costs $100, and the game just launched....
In any case, the game makes for a fun midday break. If you're really inspired to goof off at work, you can even craft your own questions and submit them for the game.
Play One Square Foot, then rate it:

I like feeling like I'm doing something, but why do the questions repeat so frequently?

In a perfect world, the ad revenues from the correct answers save the rainforest, while the revenues from the incorrect answers fund the site...

The questions repeat so you'll get more of them right, thus saving more of the rainforest! :P Kidding -- You're right. It's annoying....
