Greenlist: new de-car-ing ideas

Bike >> Don't date guys in gas guzzlers. Britain's top government scientist says the best thing women can do to ease global warming is "stop admiring young men in Ferraris." Grist reports that the official's "comments were immediately pounced upon -- not by feminists, but by Ferrari owners, who protested that their vehicles spew less than four-wheel-drive vehicles."

>> Improve fuel efficiency without changing your car. Keep those tires inflated (and keep an eye out for future fuel-efficient tires) and go steady instead of accelerating and braking all the time.

>> Commute on a cost-effective, eco-friendly hybrid bike. Susan Carpenter of L.A. Times tries out the iZip Express (right) and says it "feels like riding a tandem bicycle -- when the other person's doing more of the work."

>> Join the bike culture via Midnight Ridazz, which recently got a little ink in the L.A. Times. (via lacityorgcd13)

As has been said, using the car you have efficiently is one of the easiest, cheapest, and most effective things you can do. Building a new car produces lots of CO2, and generates mountains of toxic chemicals.

Keep the tires inflated properly (nitrogen filling is a joke, don't be conned), and drive as if there were an egg under the accelerator.

If you use a bike or walk for short trips, that really boosts the effective mileage of your car.
