Green weekend: Holiday shopping, green conferences and more
There's so much green stuff happening this weekend that I'm splitting up green weekend! Green Friday was here, and now here's the rest of the weekend:
Saturday, Dec. 8
"Climate Change and How It's Impacting Us NOW" 2007 Youth Conference (free for ages 12-21): Los Angeles Convention Center, West Hall (Yorty Hall), 1201 S. Figueroa St., Los Angeles. 8 am - 1 pm. Hosted by Million Trees Los Angeles, this conference will teach L.A. youth how they can start making a difference in their lives and the environment to make Los Angeles a greener, healthier and a safer place to live.
Park Work Day (free): Coldwater Canyon Park, 12601 Mulholland Dr., Beverly Hills. 9 am - noon. In partnership with L.A. Works, this event invites volunteers to get their hands dirty maintaining trails, removing invasive plants, replacing rocks and regrading hillsides and slopes. Make sure you register.
SAJE 2007 Just Holiday Marketplace: SAJE, 152 W. 32nd St. Los Angeles. 10 am - 4 pm. Hosted by the nonprofit Strategic Action for a Just Economy, this shopping event will have gifts from local vendors on sale, as well as fair trade coffee, food and music for all.
Renewable L.A.: The First Annual Solar Open House & Green Holiday Gift Fest (free): American Hi Definition, 7635 Airport Business Park Way, Van Nuys. 10 am - 5 pm. This free eco-fest brings together all facets of the eco-movement, from eco-car test drives to solar power demos to holiday shopping to charitable giving.
Greenopia Holiday Showcase (free): smart®house, 1319 Abbot Kinney Blvd., Venice. 11 am - 6:30 pm. Local green vendors will exhibit -- but not sell -- their goods at this 2-day showcase, put together by the local eco-directory Greenopia. Everyone's invited to come look and touch and sample while nibbling on raw food treats from Leaf Cuisine.
Sunday, Dec. 9
LA Eco-Village Tour ($10): L.A. Eco-Village, 117 Bimini Pl., Los Angeles. 10:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. Get the history and context of the village, a walk-through of the sustainable community, and learn about the problems and progress in the healthful development of an intentional community.
Earth Expedition Series: Pushed to the Edge: Species and Climate Change (free with museum admission): Jean Delacour Auditorium, Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, 900 Exposition Blvd., Los Angeles. 2 pm. Dr. Lee Hannah, Senior Fellow for Climate Change, Conservation International, will discuss his research into the many ways that life on our planet could be thrown out of balance due to global warming, and the strategies that conservationists are using to protect biodiversity.
L.A. League of Conservation Voters' Just Desserts celebration ($25): Hancock Park home of Yolie Moreno, 115 N. Van Ness Ave., Los Angeles. 3 pm. Try an array of fabulous wines paired with fabulously delicious desserts while benefiting the L.A. League along with local elected officials and environmental leaders.
