Energy week: Roundup of savings

CflSave money while saving energy! Finally, a roundup of the green energy tips from energy week way back when. Long overdue, but in the meantime I collected some extra little tips, linked to below:

1. Get CFL bulbs already.
If you still haven't swapped out those old lightbulbs, you're really missing out. To get you to switch, three anti-CFL bulb myths get busted.

Plus: In addition to Popular Mechanic's guide to picking the best CFL for your needs, Grist just put together its own CFL evaluation that takes into account everything from aesthetics to price to eco-friendliness of the packaging.

2. Slay vampires! (a.k.a. unplug gadgets)
. Cut your electric bill -- by up to 20% -- without swapping out a single appliance or cutting back how much you use all the machines in your house. How? Easy: unplug stuff you're not using.

Plus: GOOD magazine's put a nice handy chart up showing just how much vampire energy those electronics are sucking up -- and costing you. (via Lifehacker)

3. Green your computer use. This one's a three-parter, with the first two about using your current computer more efficiently, and the third about picking out a new, greener computer.

4. Get a new fridge, maybe for free
. Take advantage of the major rebates L.A. offers for swapping out old, inefficient machines -- fridges, air conditioners, washing machines, etc. -- that suck up electricity.

5. Make your website carbon neutral.
Switch to a green host and run your site on solar or wind power. Plus, get a little widget that'll offset the carbon emissions created by the total electricity usage of your readers' computers while they're on your site.

You forgot to include LED lightbulbs. Even though not as cheap, they are getting cheaper, and an excellent alternative.

Fortunately the new wall wart ac adapters are required to be more energy efficiant, and go into a very low power mode when the load is removed.

Hey Enlightenment -- I agree with you regarding LEDs for certain lighting solutions -- especially holiday lights! :) I covered LED lights here.
