Green travel to the airport

Img_3689 Tried the Flyaway from Westwood yet? The shuttle bus that whisks people between downtown L.A. and LAX runs between Westwood and LAX too.

I'd taken it once before but tried it again over the weekend. First, I took the Big Blue Bus #2 to Wilshire and Westwood (75 cents), then the Flyaway to Gate 4 at LAX ($4).

The whole trip -- including wait time -- took an hour. I suppose that's longer than it would've been if I'd had someone drop me off -- except whoever dropped me off would've probably spent an hour in traffic, if you count the way back.

Tips for Flyaway-ing: The buses really leave on time -- on the hour and half hour between 5 a.m. and 1 a.m. So be there and ready -- or wait an extra half an hour.

Living in Santa Monica, I have a cheaper option too: The Big Blue Bus rapid 3, which I used to take when I lived right off of Lincoln. But now, I'd have to take an additional bus to first get to the 3 -- a short ride, but cumbersome with luggage. Plus, the 3 drops you off at the LAX transit center to take yet another airport shuttle to the gates (free, but still), while the Flyaway drops you off curbside and helps you with your bags.

The way back: Much the same, except that after the Flyaway, I took the Metro 720 down Wilshire to get back home. Yay!

So go public transit and never deal with this again:

Flying out of Burbank? You too can take public transit to the airport with ease -- Zach Behrens at LAist shows you how.

What we really need is for the Green Line to be extended north to LAX, then further north to UCLA, over/through the Sepulveda Pass up to Metrolink in the Valley.

THAT would be a Godsend.

Sure, that would be nice.

In the meantime, try the Flyaway.

I agree Dan. I thought it was very short sighted of MTA not to run The Green Line all the way to LAX in the first place. Seems like a no brainer.

The Flyaway bus is a good alterntive 'till they do though.

I used it over the holidays last year from Downtown.

Can't beat the price and convenience.

I normally avoid flying out of LAX since Burbank is minutes from my apartment, but this weekend I needed to fly out of LAX and I will consider LAX in the future. I normally ride the train to work, but have never tried to use it to get to the airport. I took the redline to downtown (I live near universal studios) and caught the flyway to LAX and the trip took me an hour on friday evening. The worst part was walking from my apartment to the train station with my bags!

An hour -- pretty impressive! I agree the carrying bags thing's the hardest part -- It's the reason I took the BBB2 to the Flyaway instead of the 720; the BBB stop's 2 blocks closer :)
