Vicente Padilla accidentally shot in leg
Figuratively, he shot himself in the foot. Literally, the wound was a little higher.
Via Diamond Leung's Diamond Notes come reports that pitcher Vicente Padilla shot himself in the right leg. Updates indicate the wound occurred at a shooting range and fortunately was not serious.
Here's a Google translation of one of the stories:
The pitcher Vicente Padilla of the Los Angeles Dodgers was entered today in a private hospital in Managua with a bullet wound in his right leg, his family said. The player left hours later the medical center and is recovering from a wound is not serious, the sources added to the local press.
Padilla was injured when practiced at a shooting range, 22 miles southeast of Managua.
The spokesman for the National Police of Nicaragua, Vilma Reyes, told the press that the shot that Padilla was injured accidentally.
A hospital spokeswoman ... told reporters that the Nicaraguan pitcher in 32 years, this year also played with the Texas Rangers, was hospitalized for 40 minutes and already left the medical center, without gravity.
Update: Leung passes along another report that states that his bodyguard fired the wounding shot.

so apparently he floated away

I'm glad he was able to leave without gravity at least; the weightlessness takes some of the pain away.
Btw, I don't think this is quite as stupid as the Burress incident, even if still a bit stupid. He was at least somewhere where you're supposed to have a gun, and actually planned on using it, in an environment where these things generally don't happen (but can). As opposed to, you know, a nightclub. Still, athletes need to be more careful about these things.

no truth to the rumor that the bodyguard was the Texas Ranger pitching coach
Posted by: AENewman | November 03, 2009 at 05:17 PM
Does the Dodger health care plan cover anti-gravity therapy?
Posted by: Ken Arneson | November 03, 2009 at 05:17 PM
no, but the health care plan does cover massages and facials for its female executives

The Babelfish translation is much more amusing.
Big to leaguer Nicaraguan Vicente Padilla, of 32 years, was entered today the private hospital Vivian Pellets of hurt Managua of bullet. The bullet wound that received the Nicaraguan thrower Vicente Padilla, was accidental, confirmed the female leader of Public Relations of the Police, commissioner greater Vilma Kings.
Padilla was in a firing range, located in kilometer 22, of the highway to Masaya, where apparently it fired to the target and the firearm him enconchó, referred the police spokeswoman. Apparently the wound undergone in the right leg is not of gravity, but it deserved that Padilla was taken care of in the Metropolitan hospital Vivian Pellets.
As a “light accidentito” described big to leaguer Nicaraguan, Vicente Padilla the incident today lead that it to the area of emergencia of the Metropolitan Hospital, Vivian Pellets, of Managua. Without entering in detail, Padilla confirmed to the PRESS, that already is well. The thrower of the Dodgers spoke by the telephone route with Edgard journalist Rodriguez, to whom confirmed to him that she was in this welfare center, although promised to majors details to him in minutes.
On the other hand, Eduardo Riguera, manager of Public Relations of the Vivian Pellets, confirmed to the PRESS, that pinolero pitcher was in Emergencias of the hospital, during approximately one hour. According to Riguera, Padilla " he arrived by his own medios" to the hospitable center, located in the highway to Masaya.
Going to Pellets Hospital for a gunshot wound! What could be better than that?

Plus he was somewhere where sweat pants are not only acceptable, but encouraged.
Posted by: regfairfield | November 03, 2009 at 05:20 PM
So what's this about a bodyguard shooting him? Was that just the initial bogus rumor?

Hah, Eric. Babelfish is so wonderfully worthless.

Athletes just don't mix well with guns, with the exception of the Beard. Perhaps Athletes and handguns are the idiotic mix.

Correct translation: "the Nicaraguan pitcher...who also played with the Texas Rangers this year, was hospitalized for 40 minutes and has already left the medical center, like a Jayson Werth home run, seemingly without gravity. "

On Padilla's Dodgers debut start, the first time Vin tried to say his name he incorrectly called him 'Vicento Padulia'. He has not been called anything else in my circle of friends and family since. As my best friend just said, "Only Padulia".

Hahaha wow. I am glad he's ok, and glad that direct translation is still hysterical.

I was just looking through the game-by-game results on Retrosheet for 1950. I ended up, for no good reason, on the events of July 5, 1950.
For each day, Retrosheet lists who was born that day, who dies that day, who made their debut in the majors, and who played their last game.
On July 5, 1950, only one major leaguer was born: Gary Matthews the Elder.
It was also the last game in the majors for a Pittsburgh Pirates name Dale Coogan. As a bonus baby signed in 1948 out of Washington High in L.A., he went to the majors, but only played in the big leagues in 1950. He played in the minors until 1959. I noticed he died in 1989. So, I assumed the worst.
Then I tracked down his obituary in the LA Times. He passed away at age 58 of cancer. After he stopped playing in the PCL, he went to Cal State Long Beach and USC and got himself a doctorate in education. He eventually became superintendent of a school district in Orange County.
So, I guess washing out of the majors wasn't a bad thing. It seems like he did all right.

Free basketball in OKC!
I forgot that NBA TV sometimes shows a local team's broadcast as their feed for the game so it was jarring at first how much the announcers were rooting for the Thunder until I remembered. Still, they're pretty homer-ish.
Posted by: underdog | November 03, 2009 at 07:33 PM
Matt Kemp is adorable on Twitter now that he has free time. I wonder if he's rooting for the Lakers or the Thunder.
Posted by: Maddz | November 03, 2009 at 07:54 PM
Given that the Thunder didn't exist until last season, I wouldn't imagine Kemp is a big fan, so I'll guess The Bison roots for the Lakers.
Posted by: El Lay Dave | November 03, 2009 at 08:16 PM
Might be the Clips since he's buddies with Blake Griffin.
Posted by: Trolley Dodger | November 03, 2009 at 08:30 PM
I believe Kemp has professed himself to be a big Lakers fan and goes to some of their games. Probably has some curiosity and interest in his home state's new team now though.
Posted by: underdog | November 03, 2009 at 08:57 PM
Last season Kemp was pretty deeply invested in the Lakers, but he was also good friends with Trevor Ariza. I remember reading that during games when the Dodgers and Lakers were playing at the same time (MLB regular season and NBA playoffs), he'd try and find score updates in between innings.

I'm guessing it was (a) Jamie McCourt's bodyguard who fired the ill-fated shot, (b) Plaxico Burress, or (c) Manuel Noriega.

This article is the most damming I have seen at this point about the McCourts spending, more so on the signing bonuses of Latin American and Asian prospects.
Are there any stats on what other owners pay themselves for running a major league team.
Posted by: louisinsf | November 03, 2009 at 11:59 PM
louisinsf, like most big businesses, none of them want to really let you know what the top people make. Sports is unique, especially the big three in the U.S., because you can figure out what the players make, the coaches and even some of the front office people. No one ever really thinks what the owners make unless they sell the team.
And remember that this is all out of Jamie McCourt's dissolution petition where you are going to make your biggest estimates because that is how that game works.
Also, remember that one of the hallowed secrets in baseball is actually how much to teams really make, unlike the NBA and NFL that tie their salary caps to the amount of revenue made by the league, baseball has no such policy so no one really knows what is made.
To me, the harm isn't what they make, the harm is in how they wanted to portray themselves and how that is now lost and I doubt they can hire enough PR people to fix it.

Appreciate your analysis, and I definitely agree with you regarding the trust they have lost with the LA fans. I bet you Camile Johnson would have some great stories to tell.
I have never trusted Selig when it comes to the Dodgers and while I realize we are in the beginning of a nasty divorce, when Frank McCourt is going to be forced to pay Jamie some serious dollars, which he will not have on his own or through his other properties he will be forced to sell the Dodgers. Hope it comes quick.

"he will be forced to sell the Dodgers. Hope it comes quick."
I am excited at the prospect of having a new owner, I am terrified at the prospect of having a new owner.
Devil you know......

>> one of the hallowed secrets in baseball is actually how much to teams really make
The big profits in baseball are in the year-to-year increase in the value of the team, more so than operating profits or losses.
Posted by: nsxtasy | November 04, 2009 at 07:03 AM
I had asked this a while ago, and never heard a response...
Can anyone provide an idea of how long high-profile (i.e. high-dollar) divorce cases typically take to get resolved?
Posted by: nsxtasy | November 04, 2009 at 07:04 AM
One thing is for certain - getting shot is not going to increase Padilla's value on the free agent market.
Posted by: nsxtasy | November 04, 2009 at 07:05 AM
Nsxtasy, I would imagine that would be largely dependent on how easily they could settle financial disputes. That's not an answer, I know. :)
I'm thinking on the scale of months, though.
Posted by: Maddz | November 04, 2009 at 07:09 AM
I'm trying to think of an owner that could be worse than McCourt. Vince McMahon? Some yokel who won the lottery? I'm about 50/50 on both of those.

In other news, Rangers owner Tom Hicks attempted to cross the border into the US with a hunting rifle. When questioned by the police Hicks kept repeating he wanted his money back.

I don’t know if the rest of you have heard the breaking news: Dick Cheney is reported to have been at the shooting range with Vincente Padilla. It was Cheney’s gun which had discharged at the scene, not the bodyguard’s…
Cheney is said to have been shooting at what he thought was a quail running up Padilla’s pant leg. He insists he thought he was saving Padilla froma a quail bite in a private area of the body. "Who knows, if not a quail, maybe it was a bat--and they can carry rabies. I probably saved Padilla's life" said the former VP.
Padilla’s comment on the matter was so inflammatory as to not be translatable… But if Cheney were ever to bat against Padilla in a major legue game he’d need the most sophisticated batting helmet ever designed to save his life.
