Court denies Jamie McCourt's bid for reinstatement as Dodger CEO
The Los Angeles County Superior Court has ruled against Jamie McCourt in her request to overturn her termination as Dodgers chief executive officer by estranged husband Frank, according to Dylan Hernandez of The Times. Updates to come.
Update: The Associated Press reports that "Superior Court Commissioner Scott Gordon ruled Thursday in Los Angeles there is no state law to support her bid."
Update 2: Carla Hall of The Times reports that Gordon said "the issue of whether the team is community property is a complex issue that should be decided at trial, not at the emergency hearing he was presiding over today."
The hearing regarding Jamie McCourt's spousal support is set for Dec. 15.
Update 3: If the court rules later that the Dodgers are community property, Greg Risling of AP notes, then of course Jamie can re-argue to be reinstated as CEO.

I will say this for Padilla.....
He sure did (not that this warrants a long-term commitment) look good in that playoff day game at Dodger stadium. He was bringing the heat (94 - 96mph in the late innings)...and, it almost looked effortless. It was the first time in a while where I actually watched a Dodger starting pitcher take the hill and truly "Take it to the opposing hitters"....It was HE who was in complete control, and they were trying to catch up to HIM.
After watching Bills being too afraid to bring the cheese and challenge somebody even with 2 strikes....and Kershaw trying to keep the opposing batter "off balance" by spotting the curveball, and very well this season which makes me happy......Here was a guy in a Dodger uniform just mowing people down, and making it look easy. Perhaps a glimpse of what those around baseball have said he is capable of from time to time.
Then, unfortunately, he got lit up a few days later in Philly.... :-(

Has anyone else noticed that instead of a judge, they have a commissioner on this case? And not just any commissioner, but "Commissioner Gordon." How cool is that?
(for non-lawyers, commissioners are not appointed by the governor or elected by the public)

ssjames,
Word has it that Commissioner Gordon didn't want cameras in the courtroom because his red phone, which is visible in the courtroom, has the direct line to Batman printed in the space for "speed dial 2" and he didn't want other people to have access to that number.

And the McCourts both seem like they need to send out the bat signal, ssjames.

This does not bode well for my pending lawsuit to be declared Queen of England.

Is ssjames' first name Susan or Scott?
Posted by: Jon Weisman | November 05, 2009 at 10:50 AM
Jon, actually, it is neither of those it is James, but the name "ssjames" comes from Sideshow James when I used to run a Simpsons related message board.

Good, Jon, I'm glad I'm not the only one who has Kate & Allie flashbacks when I see the name.

The Korea Times is upset over the cheapening of who tosses out the first pitch:
http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/sports/2009/10/136_54546.html
They better not to come to just about any MLB game to see who gets that task.

We should send George Lopez and Kim Kardashian to Korea as part of a First Pitch Exchange Program.

Craig Calcaterra's opinion on the McCourt ruling:
"I hate it when judges cite B.S. reasons for ruling against you. Stuff like "there's no state law to support your arguments" and "your pleading was a month late" and "you're not wearing any pants, Mr. Calcaterra, please cover yourself before I throw you in jail, you utter disgrace of an attorney."
You know, just by way of example. "

Wish I could find a clip of Ahnold pronouncing San Luis Obispo county. It comes out something like San Suhbeeseeo County. Hilarious.
And while I would offer Padilla nothing more than an incentive laden contract, IMHO he has a much better arm than Garland. The Dodgers have been famous through the years for getting miles out of such, haven't they?

I'm suspicious of the Korea Times article. Would be more suspicious if it were a high resolution slideshow, instead of just that collage at the top, but still, it smells like what the table-pounding cable news guys do when they rail against sex in the media by having a five minute montage of half-naked, sweaty women play under their harangues.
I wonder if Jang Yoon-jung has a music video.

She does. And apparently she's a Klezmer musician. That was unexpected.

Pet Peeve: Those that call Jon Garland a ground-ball machine, as Aaron Gleeman does this morning. He is no such thing. Sure, he walks a lot of people and doesn't strike anyone out (as is common amongst groundball pitchers), but he's only generated more groundball outs than flyball outs once in his career. I'm not sure where this reputation came from.
Am I missing some stat that shows he is, in fact, a groundball pitcher?

- "Wait Till Next Year"
- RIP "Dodger Dugout"
- I've been a fan since 1946 (when I lived in White Plains, NY). (The Yankee fans even then were obnoxious.)
- Heaven forbid: Rush Limbaugh as owner. (I'd probably desert the Dodgers for that.) Mark Cuban might be OK though. ("Be careful what you wish for"; it would be interesting though.)
- I do want to claim credit for the Dodgers 1955 WS win. Before the season started, I figured out how the Magic Number worked and put the Dodgers' Magic Number on my wall calander. I updated it daily throughout the year.
Of course, they went on to win the pennent and the WS. (Nobody ever thanked me.)

Maybe it's me that's losing my mind here. Is a 0.9 G:F ratio indicative of a groundball pitcher?
Posted by: blue22 | November 05, 2009 at 11:47 AM
Mmmmm subtle sexism.
.9 G/F isn't a groundball pitcher.

"I don't see how you can be so absolute with your statement.
Padilla was put on the post season roster instead of Garland because Torre likes what he sees from Padilla more than Garland. "
-- I don't see how that conflicts with what I said. Prior to the end of the regular season, Torre was using Garland over Padilla when there was a choice. Clearly, Torre was going with the hot hand. But I don't see how that conflicts with the argument that in any other period, Garland has been better.
"It seems to me that Padilla will throw more "great" games than Garland, but is inconsistent. Garland will throw more so-so games than Padilla and win on consistency."
-Is there evidence for this? And even if it's true, is alternating between great and bad inherently more valuable than being the better pitcher over time?

Thank you, E.S., for the info you provided last thread. So, will Colletti offer arbitration to both Wolf and Hudson? Wolf seems like a no-brainer, but Hudson might be more complicated (I would do it). With the deadline occuring before the Winter Meetings, we don't have to worry about not having time to readjust our plans accordingly.

By the way, I was responding to Fallout's comment in the last thread.

FLAKE is a stat that basically measures pitcher consistency. Among pitchers with 100 IP Padilla was 23rd most consistent, Garland was 98th.
