Manny Ramirez watch: Countdown to hullabaloo

July 3, 2009 |  6:45 pm

Manny pregame

6:42 p.m.: Talk about your distractions: Those patriotic red Dodger caps are hard to get used to.

6:43 p.m.: Scanning the Internet -- At college baseball Hall of Fame induction, Rafael Palmeiro continues to deny knowingly taking performance enhancing drugs (via ESPN.com).

6:46 p.m.: A press conference quote (via Barry M. Bloom at MLB.com).

Then asked what he apologized to his teammates and the fans for, Ramirez added:

"Not being there for them. Not being there to play the game. I'm a huge part of the Dodgers and I'm proud to wear that uniform. I said sorry because I let those fans down. They go out there to see me play."

6:49 p.m.: Some pregame Twitter coverage:

@craigminla:  lots of dodger fans at Petco, lots of manny shirts.

@kasedoug: On the ballpark tour at Petco Park right now. Just got Vin Scully to sign my baseball! A true gentleman.

@michaeleaves: Cheers from Dodgers fans drowned out the boos from Padres fans when Manny Ramirez first stepped onfield

6:50 p.m.: Dodger general manager Ned Colletti on Prime Ticket: "We've got a system in baseball where a player tests positive, he get suspended for 50 games. You know, that's good enough for me.

6:55 p.m.: Steve Lyons doesn't think Ramirez will be in the batting groove right away.  I tend to agree, but I bet he still draws some walks. No one wants to be the first to give up a home run to him.  (Or the second, but you get the idea.)

6:58 p.m.: I'm recalling Vin Scully's introductory words the night Ramirez was suspended.

"Hi, everybody, and a very pleasant Thursday evening to you, wherever you may be. The Dodgers and the city of Los Angeles and all of California and for that matter, all of baseball, still shocked and stunned over the suspension of Manny Ramirez. We'll have more to say about that a little bit later on -- but no one man stops baseball ..."

7:00 p.m.: Scully's introduction tonight:

"Hi everybody, and a very pleasant Friday night wherever you may be, July the third, marking Manny Ramirez' return to the Dodger lineup, marking a 50-game suspension. As you can well imagine, it's been a media frenzy, something like 150 press credentials given out. But the Dodgers are trying to avoid the distraction, concentrating on the game and winning the division ..."

7:05 p.m.: Play ball. First pitch to Rafael Furcal is a strike.

7:06 p.m.: "Everybody has wanted to know the reaction of the crowd," Scully says, "and when Manny Ramirez comes up, we will let you hear, and for those of you watching on television, see the reaction, and we won't say anything until the first pitch."

7:06 p.m.: Ramirez looks serious holding a bat, waiting to go in the on-deck circle.

7:08 p.m. Furcal has a leadoff single - and the Dodgers play hit-and-run on the first pitch with Orlando Hudson.

7:09 p.m.: Ramirez does a bat flip in the on-deck circle.

7:10 p.m.: High, slow chopper by Hudson is a 5-3 groundout, by a hair. Furcal to second.

7:10 p.m.: Ramirez announced.  Loud mix of cheers and boos.  The cheers might be winning.  Lots o' blue in the crowd. Ramirez definitely in serious mode. His emotional posture does interest me, I admit.

Manny 1st 7:11 p.m.: First pitch is far inside, but not malicious. Second pitch low for a ball.

7:12 p.m.: Ramirez slices a foul to the right of right field. And then another similar foul for a 2-2 count. And another -- still 2-2.

7:13 p.m.: Tailing fastball just misses outside, ball three. "You would think this is the bottom of the ninth of a World Series," Scully says of the crowd.

7:14 p.m. The 3-2 pitch to Ramirez dips low and outside, and Ramirez is aboard on a walk, kinda like I expected.

7:15 p.m.: Chad Gaudin goes 3-0 to Andre Ethier. (Now, how exactly is Ramirez causing this?) Ethier, surprisingly I think, is green-lighted 3-0 and pulls it foul.

7:17 p.m.: Gaudin has already thrown 23 pitches as he sets up 3-2 to Ethier. Then Furcal nearly picked off at second base. Ethier might have swung at ball four and lines it foul the opposite way.

7:18 p.m.: Ethier swings at another low pitch and grounds it to first. Ramirez, running very slowly, is thrown out at second base. The return throw from Everth Cabrera is wild (Ethier would have been safe), as is the throw home, and Furcal scores easily (not even sure Gaudin deserved an error on the second throw, as Furcal seemed like he would make it). Dodgers lead, 1-0.  And isn't that what matters - the score?

7:20 p.m.: With Ethier on second base, count runs 3-1 to Casey Blake. Gaudin throwing his 30th pitch, and it's where the last pitch to Ramirez was. Two on again for the Dodgers.

7:22 p.m.: James Loney lines a 1-0 pitch to left field to score Ethier for a 2-0 lead. First-inning runs in bunches, just like in the pre-suspension days.

7:24 p.m.: Russell Martin hits a 1-2 Texas Leaguer to left-center field for an RBI single, scoring Blake. Bad break for Gaudin, who really needed a good one.

7:26 p.m.: Matt Kemp showing patience, taking a 1-0 pitch for a strike. Gaudin about to throw his 40th pitch.

7:27 p.m.: A lithe, easy swing from Kemp launches the ball to deep right-center for a double, scoring Loney and Martin. "It's 5-0 Dodgers, and whatever steam there was in this ballgame has just about gone out the window," Scully says.

7:30 p.m.: Hiroki Kuroda battling at the plate, fouling off four pitches, before falling down while swinging at Gaudin's 46th pitch of the inning for strike three. Kuroda is okay. First inning lasted 25 minutes.

7:31 p.m.: Coincidence -- Dodgers scored six runs in first inning the day Ramirez was suspended, five runs in the first the day he returns.

7:32 p.m.: Ramirez goes out to left field. No sign of bees. There's noise but nothing dramatic so far.

Kuroda p 7:37 p.m. Kuroda has a 1-2-3, 12-pitch first inning. Ramirez will bat twice before Padres slugger Adrian Gonzalez bats once.

7:40 p.m.: Already, it's come to this. Hudson is up, Ramirez is on deck, but Scully is simply talking about the pennant race.  Ramirez is the afterthought; baseball is the forethought.

7:42 p.m.: With two out, Ramirez comes up to the mixed reaction. He swings at the first pitch and hits it up the middle to David Eckstein. Ramirez is running harder down the line but is thrown out easily. Gaudin needs only nine pitches in second inning, so so much for the early knockout. Ramirez lets out a smile as he takes off his helmet -- first smile of his that I've seen captured on camera tonight.

7:47 p.m. "It's amazing, sitting up here and looking down at the Dodgers, the red hat throws you completely out of kilter," Scully says. "I mean, the rest of the uniform is a Dodger uniform, but it's amazing, you're looking down at them, and it just doesn't feel like the same club."

7:48 p.m.: Ramirez makes his first play in the field, backing up to catch the third out of the second inning. Kuroda has retired his first six batters on 21 pitches, despite a dropped foul pop by Martin (no error).

7:51 p.m.: Ethier leads off the third inning with a double.  Again, it's sort of disturbing that people will look at Ethier's stat line at some future point and give partial credit for this double to Ramirez.

7:57 p.m.: After a Blake walk and Loney groundout to advance the runners, Padres play infield in. Martin hits a smash but Cabrera smothers it. Martin gets the RBI but not the hit, and the Dodgers lead, 6-0.

7:58 p.m.: Kemp is walked intentionally, and Kuroda grounds out to end the inning. Gaudin at 74 pitches.

8:03 p.m.: Scanning the Internet – Steve Henson's take on the Ramirez press conference for Yahoo! Sports.

... The questions weren’t much different than pitches. He fought off the tough ones, crushed the ones tossed down the middle and all but spit on the ones he felt were out of the strike zone. ... Ramirez, the perpetual adolescent, was alternately flip, evasive and nervous. ...

8:05 p.m.: Cabera singles with one out in the bottom of the third to become first San Diego baserunner. Gaudin batting for himself.

8:10 p.m.: Hudson, looking surprisingly clumsy going to his right, fields a roller by Tony Gwynn, Jr. and throws in the dirt to Loney, who digs it out to end the third inning. Kuroda at 42 pitches.

8:12 p.m.: "He didn't say much, but that's what he said," Scully comments after Prime Ticket shows a short clip from the Ramirez press conference.

8:14 p.m.: Furcal leads off the fourth with a double to left-center. Scully, on topic as always, talking about Hudson while Hudson bats (noting his recent struggles) instead of blathering about Ramirez.

8:15 p.m.: Ramirez comes out for the third time.  The boos seemed stronger than the cheers when he was announced, though the cheers quickly caught up. "Not quite the same - the crowd now seated," Scully says. "In his first at-bat, three-quarters of the crowd on its feet."

8:16 p.m.: An unimpressive grounder to short on a 1-1 pitch by Ramirez, slow enough for Furcal to go to third base. I'm thinking Juan Pierre will appear in left field before this game is over, if Kuroda can keep in form.

8:18 p.m.: Ethier strands Furcal with a groundout to end the top of the fourth. Gaudin at 88 pitches - might squeeze five or six innings out yet.

8:21 p.m.: The Giants and Rockies haven't given up the ship. Colorado shut out Arizona, 5-0, giving the Rockies a 0.33 ERA in their past 27 innings. And the Giants took a 13-0 lead after three innings against Houston.

8:22 p.m.: Scott Hairston puts the Padres on the board with a solo homer to center. Dodgers now lead by the same 6-1 score they led Washington by on Suspension Day, before losing 11-9.

8:26 p.m.: Looking at the television ad for the Jr. Dodgers dance team, I'm kind of freakin' out.

8:38 p.m.: With two out in the bottom of the fifth inning, Kuroda walks Cabrera - the Dodger righty's first walk in his last 113 batters. That brings up Luis Rodriguez to pinch-hit for Gaudin.

8:40 p.m.: Kuroda deftly fields a semi-sweet comebacker to retire Rodriguez and end the fifth inning, having allowed two hits and one walk in 72 pitches with one strikeout and seven groundouts.

8:46 p.m.: "You'd think Furcal beat that down on a marble floor," Scully says of the sky-high chopper the Dodger shortstop hits for a one-out single in the sixth inning.

8:47 p.m.: Ethier is supposed to live in Ramirez's reflected glory, but it's Furcal who looks rejuvenated by the slugger's return tonight. He steals second easily.

8:48 p.m.: "Hudson really struggling - he has struck out three straight times.  And that'll bring up Manny." Again, the reaction feels rather ordinary at this point - buzzy but not full of fury, signifying anything.

Manny hat 8:50 p.m.: Ramirez pops out to second on a 1-1 pitch, takes off his helmet, exhales.

8:52 p.m.: Juan Pierre is in left field, and Ramirez's night is done.

8:55 p.m.: The Dodgers are now in the same position they were in May 7 -- trying to hold a 6-1 lead without Ramirez. Kuroda walks Gwynn and gives up an infield single off his glove to Eckstein to start the bottom of the sixth.

9:02 p.m.: Los Angeles won't coast to the finish tonight. Adrian Gonzalez doubles in both baserunners with one out to cut the Dodger lead to 6-3. Guillermo Mota will now be charged to protect the lead.

9:10 p.m.: Mota induces two groundouts to get the Dodgers out of the sixth inning.

9:15 p.m.: Scanning the Internet – Here's the first optimistic news we've heard on Hong-Chih Kuo in a while. "Kuo is doing very well," Joe Torre told Kevin Baxter of The Times. "We're very excited about that."

9:24 p.m.: Nice movement on strike-three pitch by Mota to Eliezer Alfonzo to start the bottom of the seventh inning.

9:28 p.m.: Mota bookends the inning with another strikeout. Five outs on 22 pitches, dropping his season ERA below 4.00 for the first time since April 10.

9:29 p.m.: Scanning the Internet – from Lee Jenkins of SI.com.

Like every other Hollywood diva who has been in trouble -- Winona, Paris, Lindsay, Nicole -- Manny Ramirez got his own T-shirt. It is white with royal blue script, the words "Free Manny" spelled in large block letters. Ramirez was so taken with the shirt he brought one into the Dodgers' clubhouse weeks ago and hung it in shortstop Rafael Furcal's locker. "I never moved it," Furcal said. "I never touched it." While Ramirez served his 50-game suspension for performance-enhancing drugs, the T-shirt became a constant reminder of his presence, greeting teammates as they shuffled in and out of the showers.

9:34 p.m.: Mark Loretta's groundout while batting for Mota is the eighth consecutive Dodger out.

9:37 p.m.: Ramon Troncoso in to pitch the bottom of the eighth.

9:47 p.m.: Brent Leach is brought in to face slugger Gonzalez after Troncoso walks Hairston with two out. Gonzalez blasts one to left field that looks drastically like a home run, but Pierre calmly runs it down with an upstretched arm at the wall. And a legion of sportswriters finds a hook for their sidebars.

9:50 p.m.: Furcal leads off the ninth with an infield single for his fourth hit of the night.

9:58 p.m.: Pierre and Ethier both hit arcing lineouts to end the top of the ninth. It's up to Jonathan Broxton to close out the game.

10:04 p.m.: Some radar gun in San Diego. Scully says it clocked Broxton's strikeout pitch to Kevin Kouzmanoff at 103 miles per hour.

10:05 p.m.: Broxton wraps up the ninth on 10 pitches, eight of which MLB Gameday logs at at least 100 mph.

The Dodgers win it, 6-3. The key play of the game remained not a blast, but a blooper by Martin. His soft hit in the first trumped Gonzalez's hard out in the eighth.

Manny Ramirez's return already feels like ancient history to me.

I haven't live-blogged a game like this in a long time. It was more than everything you needed to know, no doubt, but I enjoyed it. Thanks to Mrs. Dodger Thoughts for taking care of the kids and making it possible.

Noticed a lot of Dodger caps in San Diego.

Manny today - "The Dodgers are ready to take it up to another level. It's showtime! Bring it on!''

Yup. The Dodger fans have made the journey 2 hours south to support the return of Manny. His first at bat will have 20,000 people cheering along with the 20,000 booing.

It is so nice to see Manny's name back in the lineup.

I think the Padres are probably just happy to have a near-sellout for once.

Those red caps should be ashamed of themselves.

I've heard it since '87 & I still love it.

"it's time for Dodger baseball!"

And away we go...

Good eye Raffy!

I feel like I've been holding my breath for 2 months and can now exhale. Lets go Blue!

Great at bat by Raffy. Dodger fans out in full tonight for sure.

Manny Happy Returns.

Here we GO

Who's this new guy up now for the Dodgers? Weird hair. Baggy uniform. Meh.

Definately a mix of cheers and boos.

hearing more cheers then boos, what do you guys here?

Well sure it's in San Diego. Boos are to be expected. But, the cheers are loud!

Poor Padre season ticket holders...all 8 of them. ;)

Manny a little late on the fastball. But, his swing looks as good as ever.

Manny lookin' good at lot of pitches...

Yesssssssss

Chad Gaudin and Chris Elliot, separated at birth?

Good eye Manny.

Even with a walk that was exciting!

That's Manny. Love watching him battle.

Gaudin already at 20 pitches on his fourth batter.

This is great...all of a sudden Dre's not fishing pitches out of the dirt.

Nice at bat.

Andre - swinging at pitches out of the K-zone.

I booed Barry but I love Manny. I have no integrity.

RAFFY scores!

Good slide by Predator there!

Ugly but it puts a run on the board.

I'll take some sloppy defense!

Gaudin's ERA last 3 starts:

5.98
5.60
4.97

I think Gaudin's shook up by all the hoopla. Hope it continues!

Manny with the take out sliiide.

Shake n Walk.

Gaudin hits 30 pitches in five batters.

Work the count, James...

Loney!

2-0

Loney 2 out RBI!

Hey world, see! We have some other hitters on our team!

G e o f f r e y R Ribbies!

2-0

Craig, I'm a little behind. Why are you calling Loney Geoffrey?

Craig, I'm a little behind. Why are you calling Loney Geoffrey?

Oh Canada!
JMart's back too.

Oh Canada!
JMart's back too.

J-Mart!

3-0!

That is what Martin needed, never mind this game. Some flukey balls to just fall in.

i'm sure Kuroda appreciates the early lead.

Martin gets it in there! Bison time.

Wooo Martin!

That was actually a pretty swing Russ had there -

3 NIL

I love our 8th hitting All Star too.

Come on Bison, you know you want Hiroki to have an at-bat in the first inning.

BISON!

So... is this all because of Manny?

;-)

Kemp!!

5-0!!!!!

Bison Power!

I love it, Bison.

Forget the nightmares! A DREAM beginning for the Dodgers!

::smiles::

Matty is definately making a case for the All-Star team.

Our no, 8 batter hits a double, 2 RBI!

Even Vin has more spring in his step tonight. And could I get an answer on the Geoffrey question because I'm clueless.

I am reminded of the first game without Manny against the Nats. Nice welcome back from the boys to Manny.

Save some runs for Wolfy!!

Gaudin threw 46 pitches.

9 up, 5 runs

I LOVE IT

ps...what the heck was that Hiroki?

46 pitches. 5 runs and all Manny did was walk. :)

Blue Gal my friend - His teammates gave him that name because he looks and acts like the Toys R Us giraffe... ; )

If Kuroda can end them down 1-2-3, that would be mentally deflating for the Padres. Here's to kicking the other team while their down!

Nice job Hiroki, way to get six more pitches out of Gaudin.

Thanks Craig. But he's no giraffe, he's Hot!

Blue gal, I believe some find a resemblence between Loney and the Toys R Us mascot, Geoffrey the Giraffe.

Just in case anyone was missing it, I've been live-blogging up top.

Blue Gal - I won't call him that anymore for you. : )

Re the second error. Vin seemed to think that it was given because Furcal scored, but I'm pretty that it was given because it is the only way to explain Ethier reaching second.

Despite the two errors, I think all runs remain earned.

looks like little Eck has lost a step or two.

Ph My. I was a bit late "tuning in", and saw it was already 3-0. What the heck could be going on.
Then Kemp with a bit of luck IMO makes it 5-0.
I hope Kuroda doesn't hurt himself falling down.
Perhaps this will be a good environment to introduce Manny, although I would rather see him come back at Dodger stadium.

Whoa! Did Kemp have a red cap on. I will have to catch up or totally lose track of every thing. What if all the Dodgers were wearing red caps!

I could get used to this - 9 bitters, 5 runs per inning. Hmmm, that would be 45 runs, but I'll settle for 15. I hope the national media notices we can manage without Pierrexattempting to get on base. Did you see the good BA for virtually every Padre? Strange.

Hi Hirkoki 1st!

1-2-3

Jon, I must admit I was afraid of the Bee issue in LF but that was a day game and I think Bees don't come out after dark.

1-2-3 for Kuroda. Great start!

Manny's up again this inning, hope he gets something to hit.

oops, My Hiroki

Bison drove that ball pretty well. Luck there wasn't five outfielders?

I hope this isn't like when the Dodgers scored 6 in the first in the first game without Manny.

Manny DOES take this team to a whole new level.
Period.

Is the O Dawg pressing?

Even the outs are kinda tough.

Loney ballet!

Jon, I must admit I was afraid of the Bee issue

to bee or not to bee... :0)

6 up

6 down

What a start, and I'm glad it was only a 50 game suspension, not a 590 game suspension, because maybe its coincidence, but this team just feels more intimidating again

Kuroda looking very sharp so far.

How far the mighty have fallen, Poor Martin!

2 innings, 21 pitches for Hiroki.
