There are April Fools' gags, and then there are April Fools' epics. Sons of Steve Garvey, yours has been a daylong tour de force. The level of commitment is something else. Readers, be sure to start from the first April 1 entry and scroll up.

And it's so tasty, too!

Epic is the right word.

I can't believe that anyone could get sucked into that silly SOSG stuff.
BTW, Go Neeebs!

I want a burrito so badly now.

HUNGRY

I was almost born on this date, but thankfully I held out another day. I would have never hear the end of the jokes.

Somewhere, Andy Kaufman is smiling. Or just lying there dead. One of the two.
We're already taking bids on naming rights for next April Fool's Day. (Ashley Madison - you get first right of refusal!!!)

I hate Chipotle, so I think I'll go to Free Birds out here in SB just to spite them.

LAT'd twice today:
That was kind of cool. Just had a customer from Switzer, WV, who lived on Jerry West Hwy. Seems it used to be called Hwy 44, the same number as West's.

Awww, I want a Freebirds burrito. I miss the people giving me evil looks when I ask for double the meat.

The "Go L.A" graphic is classic.

It's tough back east, but I have been on a Tex-Mex tear for the last two days.(even if some of it was Taco Bell) and not homemade chile reanos. Must have been a subconscious chipotle quest.

RIP, "The Guiding Light."
It started as a radio program back in 1937.
It was Jamie Moyer's favorite.

Jamie Moyer!

So D4P's Jamie-Moyer-Alarm DID go off.

Speaking of burritos.
I had a discussion earlier today about Adrian Beltre's 2004 season. Could it be the greatest season ever by a 3B? Fangraphs has him at 10 wins that year. As far as I can tell, no player in baseball since 2002 has matched that total other than Barry Bonds. A few Mike Schmidt and ARod years are probably the other contenders.
Posted by: mattsd | April 01, 2009 at 05:46 PM
George Brett's 1980 ( .390/.454/.664) probably beats it, even with the defensive advantage Beltre has.
Posted by: regfairfield | April 01, 2009 at 05:59 PM
I'll never think of George Brett the same again after his little spring training story mentioned over the weekend at SoSG.

I read this blog every day, but I've never poked around in the comments too much until recently. I was wondering what these acronyms stood for: LAT, and PVL. I've pretty much figured out that LAT is for a comment that was posted on the previous thread when there was a new post up top, and I think PVL is a veteran player on the roster simply because of his "veteran" status...Is this correct?
Posted by: BlueCorona | April 01, 2009 at 06:24 PM
Dodgers.com reports that Eric Milton has accepted a minor league assignment unitl May 4th and Tanyon Sturtze has also accepted a minor league assigment if he does not make the club. Estes is still deciding if he will accept an assignment.
I believe James McDonald has the 5th starter job though we do not know the fate of Vargas.

The Mark Crumpacker reference killed me. The SOSG attention to detail added to the greatness of this prank.
Posted by: Eric Stephen | April 01, 2009 at 06:28 PM
Yep. LAT is named after a poster who tended to post after Jon made a new thread.
PVL stands for Proven Veteran Leadership, players who management has placed on the roster because of their experience. Sometime it gets annoying because said veterans can be only there for their PVLness and are actually a black hole of talent. Like Sweeny last year.
Although, I think the thing that goads me is that he was able to post a .100 Batting average. We could of had a new Sweeny line!

The hidden gem in the Gurnick article on the veteran demotions is that Ramon Troncoso still has a shot at a bullpen spot. Troncoso's leverage is that he's already on the 40-man of course, while Sturtze isn't.
Assuming Weaver has a bullpen spot, Troncoso/Sturtze's inclusion seems to suggest Vargas will in fact start the year on the DL (Jackson and Gurnick had conflicting reports on this earlier) if of course he's not released.

I'm very disappointed that there is no open chat thread for Game 2 of the CBI. Oregon State can win it at UTEP tonight. The Beavers would actually finish with a winning record if they pull it off.
There was also no USA-T&T World Cup qualifier talk. Hat trick for Altidore!

Andruw wins fifth outfielder spot
>>
There were some clubs that were watching Jones -- including the Reds and Phillies -- but the Rangers preferred to keep him because of the need for a right-handed hitter in the middle of the lineup. He had a double and a ninth-inning home run on Wednesday that gave the Rangers a 5-4 victory over the Angels at Diablo Stadium.
"He's looking good," manager Ron Washington said. <<

Lately management has only felt comfortable with PVLs, BlueCorona. You correctly identified those two acronyms and LAT is a long time poster who just seemed to have the knack, although I have quite a talent for getting "LATed". Ned developed in SF under the influence of Sabean and seems to feel more comfortable with a vet with no upside when compared to a young player with similar qualities. I admit to being influenced by hanging around this site, but I wouldn't have it any other way.

Andruw wins fifth outfielder spot
There's $250k back in the Dodgers' coffers (half of Andruw's salary).

LF-Manny
CF-Kemp
RF-Ethier

Molly,
Here's my take:
1) Mientkiewicz is a lock on the bench
2) Final spot (backup SS, etc) is between Castro, DeWitt, and Hu. If they believe Furcal, Hudson, and Blake will rest enough to get DeWitt ABs, he'll get that spot
3) Mota is in the bullpen
4) Weaver is probably also there
5) Final bullpen spot seems to be between Troncoso and Sturtze, with the edge to Troncoso because he's on the 40-man
I can see a scenario where both Sturtze and Troncoso make the club April 6, and one of them goes down on April 14 when Ohman gets called up.

I fully approve of the fact that UTEP uses a pick ax to form the T in its logo.

Joe Torre is undecided about two veteran infielders
>> When asked about Doug Mientkiewicz and Juan Castro, Dodgers Manager Joe Torre shook his head and laughed.
"Don't even ask," Torre said. <<
## Milton won't travel to Los Angeles with the Dodgers and will remain in extended spring training at Camelback Ranch. He has agreed to report to triple-A Albuquerque at the start of the minor league season. ##

So Tim Floyd is going to Arizona and that might cause Jamie Dixon to end up at USC.
That would pretty much be the worst case scenario possible for UCLA.
