Days after Young traded, Mientkiewicz headed to disabled list
Doug Mientkiewicz had a pinch-double in the Dodgers' 7-2 victory tonight, but had a mishap on his head-first slide into second base. Ken Gurnick of MLB.com is reporting that Mientkiewicz will be placed on the 15-day disabled list.
Had the Dodgers not added Juan Castro to the roster Monday, 2008 Dodgers pinch-hitting leader Delwyn Young would still be in the organization and able to take Mientkiewicz's spot, but Young is now a Pittsburgh Pirate. Nonetheless, the Dodgers are not empty-handed. Among others, Blake DeWitt could return, or hot-hitting Xavier Paul could be recalled, or Manny Mota could be activated.

Hindsight but they could have used those 20 days of rehab on D.Y.

The only problem with the Delwyn Young scenario, Mientkiewicz going on the DL does not solve the issue of removing someone from the 40-man roster in order to add Juan Castro. Now, if Mientkiewicz ends up on the 60-day, then that could have work.

stealth post
At least old guys have the grace to keep on injuring themselves to give the young guys their chances.

Hence, "Had the Dodgers not added Juan Castro ..."

There's also another new post above this one, FYI.

Okay, let me put it this way, unless Delwyn Young learned how to play any other postion besides outfielder, I don't think he would have been the automatic choice to replace Mientkiewicz even if that trade had not been made and Juan Castro was still in AAA.
Posted by: BHSportsguy | April 16, 2009 at 11:08 PM
Well, no, not automatic. But pretty logical considering that DeWitt would be on the roster in that scenario.

On the MLB Extra Innings commercial, doesn't the voice over guy talking about numbers and "sodoki or whatever" sound exactly like the late Jack Lemmon?

One more post at the top on a Vin Scully book.

Manny Mota... Mota...Mota...
I like the sound of that. Make it happen, Ned!
Ah well, sorry about Minky's misfortune. I missed that part of the game. I would guess DeWitt or XPaul, yeah. Probably the former. Or maybe Daniel favorite Mitch Jones!
Posted by: underdog | April 16, 2009 at 11:24 PM
Know this is next to impossible unless Schmidt or Minky goes on the 60 day DL, but it would be great to see if Mitch Jones could be given a chance he has shown real power at the minor league level. Know this won't happen. Sorta think Dewitt should be brought up because of the versatility.

I know at least one DT-er who would approve of that move Louis ;-) but I don't see it happening either.
Ugh, I just watched the video of Minky's double and subsequent shoulder injury. Ouch. I really do feel bad for the guy, especially after reading Tony Jax's latest post, about how he was practically in tears afterward. I hope he can come back.
And I really wish we hadn't traded DY, though who knows, there may still have been no guarantee that he would've been the one to get the call. I think DeWitt makes the most sense since like Minky he can play most IF positions but we'll see.
Anyway... ouch.
Posted by: underdog | April 16, 2009 at 11:41 PM
DeWitt! He went through ST with everyone and it's inevitable he's getting called up sometime this season, so why not do it now?
Posted by: Jill | April 17, 2009 at 12:19 AM
I wouldn't be surprised if Manny Mota could still hit.
I don't think DeWitt will be recalled. The idea was to have him playing everyday, and it's not going to happen if he's going to be replacing Eyechart.

I am upset now that DY is gone, I thought DY learned a lot from Sweeney last year. BUT I understand the business, and this is really just bad timing. I feel bad for eye-chart, he talked about letting the team down, it sounded as if he thought he doomed the team. But I undestand he was mainly upset that his mistake possibly could cost him a shot at contributing to the team. I would like any of the options to come up including Jones.

Interesting that Stan Conte examined Eye Chart after the injury and Doug remained in the game, only to remove himself one batter later.
In a related note, both Grant Hill and Shaq missed ZERO games due to injury this year. What do the Suns' trainers know that the rest of the world doesn't?

"What do the Suns' trainers know that the rest of the world doesn't?"
#1: Don't hire Stan Conte.

I don't want to wish Mientkiewicz onto the 60 day DL but ... Mitch Jones!
Posted by: Daniel Zappala | April 17, 2009 at 07:29 AM
I think Mitch Jones is unlikely. They'll want a left-handed bat to replace Minky. DeWitt seems most likely.

In all seriousness, how does a trainer who was with Jason Schmidt in San Fran, presumably signed off on signing Schmidt to a huge FA contract in LA, still have a job?
That decision is the equivalent of signing off on making Ishtar.
IMO, that was beyond borderline negligence.

I was just starting to grudgingly give Eyechart his due after the double last night. Oh well. When I saw "injury delay" on Gamecast, my fear was Loney or Kemp got hurt running the bases. Fortunately that wasn't the case. I wish Eyechart a speedy recovery.

make that Ethier and Kemp running the bases
