1.  If the Padres are definitely hell-bent on trading Jake Peavy this off-season, then I think they are indeed better off talking to the Angels anyway. The Angels seem to have a better fit as far as young players that could be expendable but also fill a need for the Padres. More so than the Cubs imho. Not that either team is going to give SD the 6 players for Peavy deal they're looking for.

9.  Agent Paul Kinzer said that he expects Rafael Furcal to make a decision on his future next week.
The Dodgers, A's, Blue Jays and Royals are Furcal's known suitors, and the Blue Jays and Royals would both have to make moves to trim payroll in order to have any chance of affording him. It'll probably come down to the Dodgers and A's.

2001 - Dewon Brazelton - 3rd overall
2002 - B.J. Upton - 2nd overall
2003 - Delmon Young - 1st overall
2004 - Jeff Neimann - 4th overall
2005 - Wade Townsend - 8th overall

Also, I've been wrestling with ToyCannon's statement last thread that Cuttino Mobley was the first "name" free agent signed by the Clippers. I can't think of any better, earlier off the top of my head.

24.  I think it's beginning to look more and more like Manny may end up with the Dodgers' (with them as his only real suitor).
Let me say that I have always been a supporter of signing him, if we could at a "reasonable" figure...say 78M for three years with an option on a fourth containing an opt-out by either side. If it is true that the Angels have no real interest in Manny, then we may able to low ball and get him for less.
Which is going to make Manny one p.o'd ballplayer.
My question--even as a Manny fan--is:
do we really WANT a disgruntled Manny Ramirez?
To my surprise I find myself thinking that I probably don't.
I believe we wouldn't be competitive over the long haul of the 2009 season without his power bat.
But would we be competitive with him acting out his displeasure?

This must have been in the early FA days for the NBA, where signing teams had to give crazy compensation. From the same article:
Many Clippers were outraged at the price the team had to pay to acquire the injury-plagued, 26-year-old Walton: forward Kermit Washington, center Kevin Kunnert, a first-round draft pick and $350,000.
I want to say the Lakers got the draft pick to get Magic as part of the compensation for Gail Goodrich signing with New Orleans, but I'll have to double check that.
Posted by: Eric Stephen | December 11, 2008 at 05:48 PM

35.  There doesn't appear to be that much interest from other teams, so I assume we will sign Manny.
With Furcal, it seems 50 / 50. If we sign him, I think it will blow our budget for a free agent starting pitcher. Since the big guns all seem close to signing with other teams any way, I think we should make a push for Furcal.
That leaves our rotation as fairly average for next year, but Hu / DeJesus could get us some type of arm.

37.  David Stern was on the "B.S. Report" podcast yesterday, and alluded to the early days of free agency. In 1976 or so, Stern was an attorney working for the league when it reached an 11-year bargaining agreement with the players. For the first 4 or so years, there was compensation for free agents signing with other clubs.
I was right about the Goodrich-Magic connection:
In a complex and controversial deal, Cooke allowed him to sign with the Jazz in return for two future first-round draft choices and a second-round pick. The trade, although criticized at the time, paid off for the Lakers a few years later, when they used one of the picks from the Jazz to select Magic Johnson No. 1 overall in the 1979 NBA Draft

38.  The San Diego Clippers are not the Los Angeles Clippers or I'd be talking about the Buffalo Braves. You don't see a Bob McAdoo Jersey hanging at Staples do you? Unlike others I don't include a teams history once they move from the city that supported them. In my mind my point still stands.

Posted by: Eric Stephen | December 11, 2008 at 06:06 PM
46.  36 But and maybe this makes your book even more interesting, without the Longoria and Price picks, I'd argue that their first round picks, given their draft position, was fair.

49.  More on the Mobley signing from LAist a few years back. The title supports ToyCannon:
http://tinyurl.com/6g3sxq
Well, since the Clippers moved to Los Angeles in 1984, they have signed three players who are even slightly notable - Jamal Wilkes in 1985, Sherman Douglas in 1999, and Glen Rice in 2003. At the time though, all of those players were well past their primes, and none of them had any impact whatsoever, playing a combined 61 games

Posted by: trainwreck | December 11, 2008 at 06:11 PM
53.  Rays were built on trades or free agent signings of other teams number one picks (Pena, Garza, Kazmir) as much as their own astute picks. Shields was considered nothing in the fall of 2005 and probably only got a chance because the Rays were so lousy. In the AFL that year he might have been the best pitcher I saw but I couldn't get anyone to say he was going to be a major league pitcher.

61.  59 If he was there for 9 years, wouldn't Piatkowski have been a free agent at some point during his Clipper career and then chose to re-sign with them? I remember hearing about how he chose to stay with them when he could have left and I was completely shocked and developed a new level of respect for him then.

68.  Since I bothered to look up Piatkowski's already, here are some numbers:
Piatkowski career PER: 14.0
Mobley career PER: 14.4
Piatkowski season high PER: 18.2
Mobley season high PER: 17.7
Piatkowski's career PER also includes the last few years where he's declined a ton. But he's still shooting 3's at a 42% clip this year.
Posted by: fanerman | December 11, 2008 at 06:49 PM
69.  68 Of course factoring usage and what not, Mobley is certainly better. But Piatkowski's had a legit career and I've always kinda liked him. And of course there's the BINGOOOOO thing.

70.  Great trade by the Rays today in getting Joyce, and great analysis of the trade over at FanGraphs by Dave Cameron (USSM fame). It would be great to see one of the Yankees or Red Sox miss the playoffs again next year. I am getting sick of the Red Sox success, but I think I'd get more pleasure in watching the Yankees miss the playoffs again, especially if they keep unloading the cash to all the best free agents this offseason. vr, Xei

83.  Apart from a relatively svelte Druw, the photo on the tarmac in the DR also showed Rafi lugging around his young son, so he's back must be feeling pretty good.
Not signing Furcal would mean that the Bums will need a lead-off hitter. Bison seemed to fill that role fairly well when Rafi was hurt, though I always pictured him as a power hitting corner. I would suspect that Torre in particular would try to get him to cut down on k's in that slot, which might result in a plate approach that would leave his power potential untapped, as it were.

92.  The Manny negotiations, or non-negotiations, haven't held up the Dodger plans, in large part because general manager Ned Colletti and his aides are barely involved in any Manny talks. Owner Frank McCourt is handling things. No one knows for sure how much money he'll spend, but some people in the organization believe it will eventually be enough to get a deal done.
