Omen? Nemo

Dodger Thoughts, September 18, 2007:
I do keep thinking about that error Rafael Furcal made 11 days ago in San Francisco. The team was on such a roll before that inadvertent stumble. For me, so much changed from that point on. It's been uphill ever since. The irrational part of me worries about a repeat. Not just because Furcal's error Thursday pivoted a win into a loss, but the idea that it could be a harbinger of the good times no longer rolling.
That being said, I'm not overcome by a doomsday feeling. I'll be on the edge of my seat today the same way I was for Game 1.

Some computer-bound folks found this link useful.

1.  That is just hurtful to bring that up.

2.  agreed.

3.  What's that cliché? "From little acorns mighty oak trees grow."
Let's hope that error isn't a harbinger of doom.
To be clear, I don't think things like that carry over from game to game.

Does anyone know if the "Fox Feeds" link will actually play the game over MLB.com?

8.  Whoops, meant 3 . Oh, and we're not the Cubs.

9.  I think I was at that game.
Posted by: fanerman | October 10, 2008 at 12:10 PM
10.  It's amazing to think the Dodgers could still have 13 games left. Imagine how strung out we'll be if we go that far.
Posted by: Jon Weisman | October 10, 2008 at 12:13 PM
11.  These things change quickly. With the weird shadows and awkward timing of today's game I expect something weird on the field today. Hopefully, to our advantage. Perhaps the baseball gods way of making up for Kemp losing the ball in the sun back in August in Philly.

12.  Also, look for Nomar to start somewhere in Game 3.
Nomar vs. Jamie Moyer:
15 for 36

13.  I cant remember the last time the Dodgers had so many veteran free agents:
Furcal
Lowe
Manny
Blake
Kent
Nomar
Penny (option)
Do the Dodgers re-up any of them?
Does how far they go in the playoffs affect whether they are re-signed?
I think if the Dodgers win the NLCS, the pressure will be on the GM to bring them all back. However, if it loses, I could see the decisions being easier publically for going a different direction (and Ned & McCourt have always been about public relations-1st, baseball decisions-2nd).

14.  RIP Charlie Manuel's mom. That's so sad, and it really sucks to happen now, too. I wish him all the best.

Who cares as we are still playing baseball on Oct 10th for the 1st time in 20 years. Unlike years past we don't need to talk about next year, this year is still happening.
Posted by: ToyCannon | October 10, 2008 at 12:29 PM
16.  I think we will make efforts to re-sign Nomar, Furcal and Manny (I'm optimistic).
Bye bye Blake, Penny, Lowe and Kent.

Strange story, what possible benefit would Magic have had to fake his Aids. Can anyone say anything with a mike? I've never quite understood libel laws.
Posted by: ToyCannon | October 10, 2008 at 12:33 PM
18.  17
As a public figure, Magic Johnson would face a very, very tough battle to get any monetary damages from those characters for libel or slander.
Posted by: Bob Timmermann | October 10, 2008 at 12:38 PM
19.  16 I think we'll try to resign Lowe, too.
I think we'll drive a pretty hard bargain for Furcal and Nomar. They might not be impressed and are 50-50 to go elsewhere.
I think we're in the hunt for Manny at whatever price.
Posted by: dzzrtRatt | October 10, 2008 at 12:38 PM
20.  If we do sign Manny, who plays centerfield, and what happens to the two other guys not playing centerfield?

I would like to channel my rage into today's baseball game, so here goes:
One of the radio hosts in question is named Chris Baker. Today, this article ran about Phillies fans:
http://tinyurl.com/4lfw9k
The first sentence: "Chris Baker doesn't have to wear his Phillies loyalty on his sleeve he's got it tattooed on his arm."
Transitive property:
a) Chris Baker thinks Magic faked AIDS (even though Magic doesn't have AIDS; he's HIV positive)
b) Chris Baker is a Phillies fan with a tattoo on his arm
c) Phillies' fans think Magic Johnson faked AIDS
Dodgers 8, Phillies 2

22.  Yep, Fanerman and I were both at that fateful game in SF last year. Glad to know the omen, or the blame can go to Raffy, since we weren't at last night's game; for awhile I thought it was our fault. Whew!
Oh, and Bob, from previous thread re: elderly parents of elderly people -- it's true. My grandfather passed away late last year at the age of 100 just months before my dad turned 70, and was pretty healthy up until his last few months. May we all live that long.
Here's to a reverse of yesterday's score.
Posted by: underdog | October 10, 2008 at 12:45 PM
23.  13 - Even if the Dodgers win it all, I don't see how they could possibly afford to resign all.
Here's a shot in the dark at their 09 salaries:
Furcal -15M
Lowe - 15M
Manny - 25M
Blake - 10M
Kent - 5M
Nomar - 5M
Penny - 9M
That's around 85M for 7 players.

Of course he is a Phillies fan. ; )
Posted by: trainwreck | October 10, 2008 at 12:46 PM
25.  20 I thought the phrase "who plays centerfield" was a modifier for Manny and not an independent clause.
I have no idea if I'm using those words properly but I'm pretty sure I know what I'm talking about.
Posted by: fanerman | October 10, 2008 at 12:47 PM
26.  15- I think its relevant because how the team does in this game, and the rest of the series will go a long way towards deciding if this team comes back or is revamped.
Posted by: JoeyP | October 10, 2008 at 12:48 PM
27.  23 Kent, Nomar and I'm pretty sure Penny are not coming back. You can scratch them off the list, imho. Lowe is doubtful, though I wouldn't mind bringing him back. Even if they try to re-sign him, I picture him heading east next year. To me, Furcal, Manny and Blake (possibly in that order) are the only ones there's a decent chance they'll try to bring back.
Posted by: underdog | October 10, 2008 at 12:51 PM
28.  Oh wow, the game starts at 1:35 PST? I was trying to schedule my lunch break for the first few innings and was packing up to leave... thank goodness I checked Dodger Thoughts.
Posted by: wronghanded | October 10, 2008 at 12:52 PM
29.  Sorry if this has been brought up already, but did Vin make the trip back east for these games?
Posted by: fordprefect | October 10, 2008 at 12:53 PM
30.  27 - Agreed, yet I wasn't by any means advocating for their return. I was just estimating what they'd all make to point out that they couldn't possibly all be resigned by the Dodgers.
Posted by: FirstMohican | October 10, 2008 at 12:54 PM

But as a fan, are you rooting for them to win today or in the next two weeks because of how it affects the offseason, or because you want them to win?

Whoever gives Blake 10 million a year deserves to be fired. From everything. For the rest of their life.
I also believe that Manny is rumored to be asking for 5yrs, 80mil.
Posted by: Who Is Karim Garcia | October 10, 2008 at 12:55 PM
35.  34 5 years 80 million seems a bit low.
Posted by: fanerman | October 10, 2008 at 12:56 PM
36.  35 - The rumor was 5/85, but like most rumors, it didn't seem credible to me.
Posted by: Jon Weisman | October 10, 2008 at 12:59 PM
37.  27 I think Nomar will be back. Where else would he go? Unless he reallyreallyreally wants a guaranteed starting job, and there's another team out there willing to give him one, I think his best option is to come back to LA and be Mr. SuperSub bench guy again.
Posted by: Disabled List | October 10, 2008 at 12:59 PM
38.  Maybe Manny ends up with a contract below $20 million a year, but there's no way that's his asking price. Not after he opted out of two years of options at more than $20m.

The way the picture is being painted it seems more to me that Manny letting those two years go has more to do with leaving Boston and Boras making sure he got himself paid.

44.  Fox had music from a christian punk band during the intro to the game... odd choice for baseball. Wonder how they picked that song.
Posted by: FirstMohican | October 10, 2008 at 01:05 PM
45.  34 - You familiar with the phrase "shot in the dark"?
Posted by: FirstMohican | October 10, 2008 at 01:06 PM
46.  42 - "Agent Scott Boras has let it be known through his media outlets"
Who actually spoke to Boras?

47.  Who actually spoke to Boras?
Wasn't me. I wouldn't give that guy the time of day.
Posted by: D4P | October 10, 2008 at 01:11 PM
48.  I think the Angels will be in the Manny game next year if they do not sign Teireira. The Dodgers might try to get Lowe if they don't get CC and that will be the backup plan for lots of teams.
Posted by: Bumsrap | October 10, 2008 at 01:13 PM
49.  47 - Would you give him the wrong time of day, just to throw him off the scent?
Posted by: Jon Weisman | October 10, 2008 at 01:13 PM
50.  34
Wasn't criticizing you, sorry. I don't think your numbers are that far off. Blake at 10mil would be a blunder, however.
46
Like I said, for what it's worth. Manny has made a splash here and hasn't shown much of a decline, however, I find it hard to believe that Manny will get the 5yr, 100mil that I heard thrown around before.
Anyone have a feed for the game? Other than the fox feed, that is.
Posted by: Who Is Karim Garcia | October 10, 2008 at 01:15 PM
51.  I wish the Dodgers weren't playing today. I hate being disappointed on a Friday. Like the teacher giving a really hard math test just before the weekend. They better win today, so I can be a happy drunk tonight. If not, WATCH OUT INLAND EMPIRE!

56.  when you get that feeling of impending doom, you just have to remember: past success (or failure) is not an indication of future success (or failure); all that matters is the here and now, play the game in front of you and let the universe take care of everything else.
Posted by: KG16 | October 10, 2008 at 01:24 PM

93.  89 - a little bit of both. He's got a couple of called strikes on the edges (outside to both Manny and Martin). The missed 3rd strikes look like they'd be called strikes, or at least one's that you have to defend against as a hitter.
