My IE has been riddled with spyware for a while now which caused me to switch to Firefox. Though I have no complaints, I was hoping to get rid of whatever is still in my system. I run Ad-Aware and Spybot all the time, but never realized that you're supposed to do it in Safe Mode. So, I tried rebooting in safe mode, but apparently my computer won't let me. F8 does nothing, but when I press F12 it gives me a boot menu. Unfortunately, none of the boot options mention safe mode. Anybody know what's going on here?

13.  11- Sounds like your entering the BIOS menu. You have to wait for the Power-On Start Test to finish before trying to get the safe-mode menu. There should be some kind of title screen at boot with the logo of your computer's, or motherboard's, manufacturer. Once that goes off, start tapping the F8 key.

18.  Did it tell you what it couldn't uninstall? Often you can google the name and find manual uninstall instructions. Lots of malware is written cleverly enough to notice that it's been deleted and reinstall itself, so, sometimes you have to hand delete registry keys, and hidden folders.

Uninstalling IE is, if I remember correctly, as easy as (you're running XP, right?) opening Control Panel>Add or Remove Programs>Add or Remove Windows Components and unchecking the box next to Internet Explorer.

19.  Poking around a bit, as I ought to have done before, it looks like that doesn't really work. You didn't ask whether removing IE is a good idea, but it probably should be pointed out that it's really not. You can disable it, somewhat, as described here.

Apparently they made announcements every half inning. People said it felt like a small market play, when several Mets are going anyway.

30.  Nate, quite often spyware sets itself up to reinstall every time you boot. Go into Regedit and look in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion and click on the Run folder. That lists every program that starts when Windows boots. Legitimate programs will be in there, but there may be some suspicious things too. Google the program or applet name and see if it takes you to a spyware discussion page. Delete any thing you think is suspicious and restart. Of course, make a copy of your registry before you do any of that. You can do that under the File menu, select export.

35.  20- That was the contention, and it's somewhat true. I thought I'd remembered that as a part of their settlement, they'd folded, and complied with requests to make it easy to get rid of, at the user's peril. I misremembered.

There's an Australian who put together a software package that deletes most of IE (and other things), leaving behind some of the dynamic link libraries so that operation isn't totally destroyed. I've never used it, or heard of it before yesterday, but any chance I get to stick it to the man by paying money to delete free software, well, I call that a bargain.

38.  I was wondering when somebody would say, "Buy a Mac!" Scareduck is even edgier than that! I've messed with Linux, but only in dual boots, that I ended up nearly never using. It doesn't play nicely with my built-in wlan. I know it isn't Linux's fault, but it's not my fault either. And there are still sites that, while backward and worthy of shunning, are still necessary that don't dig nonIE browsers.

But, when the revolution comes, oh, that'll be something.

39.  38 - I have two Macbook Pro's at home (one for me, one for the wife), a Linux box as my primary desktop, and my wife has a pair of Macs, an old G3 running OS 9 and one of the last generation of PowerPC desktops running OS X. The only Wintel box we have in the house is a dedicated synth for running one of her sound library apps, but even that doesn't get much utilization, since the newer software can run pretty much concurrently on well-equipped Macs. (Helen's laptop runs a Windows emulator for a gym application she uses, but it doesn't do dual-boot via BootCamp or any other.)

None of them have viruses.

This is not a coincidence.
