National League Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw asked the Dodgers for a $10-million salary on Tuesday, with the Dodgers countering at $6.5 million.

The exchange of proposed salaries was mandated by the arbitration process. The Dodgers avoided arbitration with Andre Ethier and James Loney earlier in the day, agreeing to pay Ethier $10.95 million and Loney $6.375 million.

Kershaw earned $500,000 last season, the final one in which the Dodgers could pay him whatever they liked. This is the first season in which he is eligible for salary arbitration.

If he is awarded $10 million, he would receive the most money for a starting pitcher in his first or second year of salary arbitration.

Kershaw and the Dodgers can continue to negotiate until an arbitration hearing next month. It is more common for teams to settle between the two proposed figures than to proceed to a hearing.
