For the Dodgers, the players just keeping coming and going.

[Update: Exactly who’s coming, however, was suddenly left undecided at gametime Friday.

Expected to come on board before their game at Cincinnati was right-hander Vicente Padilla, their almost-but-not-quite closer.

Scheduled to go on the disabled list, and completely unexpectedly, is right-hander Jon Garland, who has an inflamed shoulder.

And still tapping into what youth they have, the Dodgers have scheduled rookie Rubby De La Rosa to take Garland’s upcoming start Tuesday in Philadelphia.

In other words, just another typical day for your 2011 Dodgers.

Only it became yet more complicated before the game Friday when the Dodgers did not make a move. Don Mattingly had said before the game they would not activate Padilla until they were certain he was fully healthy. Dodgers spokesman Josh Rawitch simply said Padilla was not ready. Padilla is on the DL with a sore forearm.

If Padilla is not yet ready to go, the Dodgers will have to call up someone else from the system before Garland’s next scheduled start. Garland did not make the trip.]

Garland, who had never been on the disabled list in his 11-year career before this season, would now go on it for a second time. He sat out at the start of the season because of an oblique injury.

Garland (1-5) showed no visible signs of arm trouble in his last start, Wednesday against the Rockies, going six innings and giving up three runs on five hits.

De La Rosa, the Dodgers’ reigning minor league pitcher of the year, was called up from double-A Chattanooga on May 24. Used exclusively as a reliever, he is 1-0 with a 1.80 earned-run average in three games. In his five innings, he has struck out five, walked one and given up three hits.

De La Rosa was a starter at double A.

The Dodgers have used the disabled list 17 times this season (13 players). Stay tuned, however -- the day is young.
