Dodgers now wait on MLB approval of security chief

Dodgers vice chairman Steve Soboroff has blasted Commissioner Bud Selig’s takeover of the Dodgers as ‘irresponsible’ and wondered aloud why Selig would claim such urgency in intervening without having a trustee at the ready. Indeed, according to an official familiar with Selig’s thinking, the commissioner is unlikely to announce the selection of a trustee until next week.

The Dodgers did their best to make their point clear to Selig on Thursday. They were prepared to hire a full-time security chief, a position that owner Frank McCourt has left vacant for four months and that Selig’s lieutenant had urged him to fill promptly. If McCourt had his usual authority, he could have made the job offer and, perhaps, had the new hire in place by the end of business on Thursday.

However, with Major League Baseball calling the shots, the Dodgers could only call the commissioner’s office and submit the unidentified candidate for approval. The Dodgers were not provided with an immediate response, according to two people briefed on the discussion, and it is unclear whether MLB might approve that new team security chief Friday or defer any decision until the trustee’s probable arrival at Dodger Stadium next week.
