Davey Lopes leaves Dodgers following death in his family

Davey-lopes_275 The teacher will have to watch his students from afar Saturday, if with a heavy heart.

The Dodgers said Davey Lopes, given much of the credit for the way the team aggressively ran the bases in their first two games, will not be with the club this afternoon because of a death in his family.

Dave Hansen will coach first base while Lopes is out.

The Dodgers won their first two games of the season against the Giants, largely because of a more aggressive approach on the bases. Lopes is also their base running coach.

The Dodgers are at home Sunday against the Giants, but are off Monday. They have games Tuesday and Wednesday in Colorado, with another day off Thursday. They then play three games at San Diego, where Lopes lives.

My condolences, Davey.

I want to thank Donny Baseball for forfeiting today's game by putting his B team out there on day 3 of the MLB season. No other team - and I asked around all my other fan friends - substitutes whole teams like the Dodgers do on a day game, usually Saturday following a night game, and a more often than not, a game of the week - like the Dodgers do. I thought it was just Torre but apparently it is a Dodger tradition. Other teams do not comply when they are playing us. They just tip their hats and say thanks for the wins! It must really piss off the pitchers. If I was Ted Lilly I would have refused to take the field. Ivan de Jesus and Gimenez with no (0) major league hits. A 12 million dollar shortstop resting game three. X-man (when will he be released) in left because he is out of options. Gimme a break. Glad I didn't buy a ticket to Camelback Ravine. Thanks for taking away all the momentum Donnie. Yes, we know its a long season. But the Giants have nothing to prove. We do. A sweep or 3 out of 4 will now more likely turn out to a split at home. Does Donnie have the dagger to the heart mentality that is necessary to win at all costs in this highly competitive division? One has to wonder.

@Hollywood Dodger Mark

It's the third game of the season, get over it.

OK, so we lost 10-0. It's only the third game of the season. I'd rather lose by ten than by one. This was one of those "thoroughly forgettable" games, as Vin Scully would say, that we just forget about and move on. Start all over again tomorrow.

@Hollywood Dodger Mark: Glad someone gets it. Just wish it were Donnie.

Hollywood Dodger I very much agree. It was GAME 3, for cryin out loud, against the dreaded rival and world champion Giants!?! What does Furcal need a rest from?

Back in his Phillie days, T. Francona was notorious for doing the same thing. It got to the point that his Sunday lineups were a joke and it was embarrassing for me to take my son to a game.

It's not June or July! It's not 95 degrees in the shade. Let's play ball and take it to the Giants!

Mattingley did not substitute the "whole" lineup. He sat Furcal (33, SS with a history of a bad back) and Barajas (35, C, enough said). Uribe had arm swelling due to being hit by a pitch, so he wasn't going to play.

Sunday comes, and a rested Furcal goes 2-4, RBI, 2 Runs, and the Dodgers win.

3 out of 4 is fine by me.

My condolences to Davey, my All-Time favorite Dodger, and the biggest off-season acquisition by the team.

Davey, my heart & prayers are with you, you're one of my all time favorite Dodger players of all time!
