Manager Joe Torre was delighted with his team’s offensive performance in the Dodgers’ 14-1 victory Saturday night, as he chose to focus more on his team’s 15 hits than he did on the Arizona Diamondbacks’ six errors.

‘I’m glad we kept coming at people,’ Torre said. ‘That’s a manager’s dream when that happens.’

Said Matt Kemp, who hit his 14th home run: ‘We scored 14 runs, man. It sounds pretty good.’

Torre and others had a good laugh at the first of the Dodgers’ two mishaps on the bases. With one out during the Dodgers’ six-run second inning, Rafael Furcal hit a ball over the head of Diamondbacks center fielder Chris Young. With his back to home plate, Young got under the ball, only for it to pop out of his glove. Clayton Kershaw, who was on first base, reached second, but realizing that he never saw Young catch the ball, reversed course.

Soon, Kershaw was face-to-face with Furcal.

‘Raffy said, ‘Go! Go! Go!’ ‘ Kershaw said. ‘I just froze.’

Said Furcal: ‘I froze, too.’

Furcal was called out for passing Kershaw.

‘He passed me,’ Furcal said, laughing.

Torre joked that had a younger version of him hit that ball, the mistake never would have happened.

‘I never would’ve got to second base in time,’ Torre said.

Kershaw, who pitched 5 2/3 shutout innings, said he felt bad that he likely cost Furcal a triple.

‘Chalk that up to not being on base enough,’ Kershaw said. ‘If you see me out there doing early work, that’s what I’m doing.’

The other gaffe on the bases was committed by Xavier Paul, who was called up from triple-A Albuquerque to replace Manny Ramirez.

Paul reached base on a fielding error, but was tagged out when he stepped into fair territory.

‘That was unfortunate,’ Paul said.

Paul drew a second-inning walk in which he took only three balls.

‘I had no clue,’ Paul said.

The same was true of Torre, who recalled Paul being behind 0-2 and looking up at the scoreboard to suddenly see the count was full.

‘I thought he got to three balls awfully quick,’ Torre said.
