Gingrich: Contract with America, round two

November 13, 2009 |  2:44 pm

Newt Gingrich, the former Republican House speaker and purveyor of the GOP "Contract With America'' that helped his party win control of the House after President Clinton's election, says GOP Chairman Michael Steele has started work on a new framework for 2010 that he is calling "first principles.''

"I've been talking with Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele, '' Gingrich said today, speaking with students at C-SPAN's Cable Center Class.

"He is developing a first principles model that I think is a very exciting, positive step in the right direction,'' said Gingrich, who has said that he will decide by February about waging his own campaign for president. "By September, it might be very, very good for the Republicans in the House and Senate to have a common ground on which to campaign, whether they call it a Contract for America or some other device.

"Having a positive set of things that say, 'If you elect us, these are the positive steps we will take,' '' Gingrich said, on a program that C-SPAN3 is airing at 2 p.m. PST. This "may well be the key building block to really become the alternative party, not the opposition party.''

Mr. former Speaker, it is informational to know that you have talked with Michael Steele about a Contract with America or basic principles part 2. You have also talked in past weeks with the party officials of New York District 23 regarding their choice of Scozzafava as the republican nominee for that position, the candidate which you endorsed. In your endorsement of her you spoke to your commitment to following the local party leadership in endorsements. Your were wrong then and now. You continue to miss an important if not critical principle, still lacking in your approach to formulating strategy, the average American.

Mr. Gingrich you need to be talking and spending your time with common ordinary Americans, Those who work, when they have jobs, and make this country, its towns and businesses the envy of the world. It's nice that you have debated Howard Dean on the road concerning HealthCare reform. Although, that experience might be helpful in several ways to you, there is absolutely no substitute for anyone (you included) speaking and listening to the American people.

Contract with America or any commitment to a paper plan is past history, frankly it did not work that well. Travel the nation, talk to average people, and perhaps you will discover out of the box ideas to create jobs and point this sick economy back to health. I continue to propose a jobs restoration program, a claw back of those employment opportunities that have been sent overseas because of unfair trade agreements. In your recent trip to China, what did you accomplish with the Chinese government relative to job restoration for aging and dying American cities?

True job restoration can be built by rewarding those corporations who bring jobs back to U.S. workers with exemptions from paying federal and state company taxes--exempt them, China does. Frankly Mr. former Speaker, my service would be to the true employers of government officials--the American people, not lobbyists, party officials, media celebrities, even beltway hacks--I would serve only my fellow citizens. We must have a level playing field with foreign countries!

To truly serve Americans you must talk, listen, and get to know them. A second contract with America is epilogue not prologue, we need action and millions of jobs now, not paper. Although, I would welcome your ideas, frankly to solve this jobs problem I am more interested in the thoughts of average working Americans.

Hopefully, such "First Principles" would include concepts like freedom of speech, habeas corpus, a right to trial by a jury, and the incredibly rare principle of.... honesty.

Expressing a set of principles appeals to me because, frankly, I have no idea what the Republican Party holds true. I agreed with virtually all of Mr. Gingrich's Contract with America nearly 20 years ago (I still agree with them) but when the Republicans were in power they implemented none of them.

I have turned to 3rd party candidates of late, because I no longer believe most Republican's rhetoric. When they show me that they adhere to a set of principle with which I agree they will have my votes, my active support, and my donations. But remember - I'm wary. (Fool me once, shame on you....)
