Small Bites (breakfast edition): Contortionists, Santa and IHOP's egg nog pancakes

Breakfast Coffee, tea or contortionists? Michael Mina's new Sunday brunch menu at XIV in Hollywood includes bagels and lox, chopped salad, a fruit plate, eggs Benedict, steak and eggs, caviar parfait, a Kobe burger or a vegetarian falafel burger, and chilled prawns or snow crab. A restaurant representative also says there are contortionists, fire-breathers and stilt-walkers. Has anyone witnessed this yet? Sundays, noon to 4 p.m. 8117 Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles; (323) 656-1414; www.sbeent.com.

Looking for Santa? Santa's working brunch at Patina Restaurant Group's "Breakfast With Santa." Holiday brunch, storytelling, cookie decorating and photo opportunities are on offer at select Patina Group locations. For locations, dates and times, see the jump.

Is that pecan pie filling in my pancake? IHOP's seasonal pancakes include pumpkin pancakes made with spiced pumpkin; ginger spice pancakes with powdered sugar and holiday sprinkles; pecan pie pancakes, with pecan pie filling between two buttermilk pancakes; and egg nog pancakes, with vanilla cream, cinnamon and nutmeg between two pancakes, topped with cinnamon sugar and butter rum. All have "whipped topping." See www.ihop.com for locations.

Gordon Ramsay opens Boxwood Cafe at the London West Hollywood

Gordon-Ramsay Gordon Ramsay just added an informal addition to the London West Hollywood, just inside the front dining room of his eponymous fine-dining restaurant. It's called Boxwood Cafe by Gordon Ramsay and it features a streamlined menu of simple, comfort fare created using seasonal ingredients and local produce. Prices are lower, too, with the average entree hovering around $16. Executive Chef Andy Cook helms both restaurants.

Boxwood serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. The menu includes a variety of organic egg dishes, waffles, hot cereal, fruit and yogurt for breakfast; and pizettes and salads alongside more involved dishes such as sake miso-marinated Pacific black cod, steak au poivre with pommes frites and baked artichoke tarts for lunch and dinner. There is also a list of wine and beer with a focus on California microbrews and vintages.

Boxwood Cafe opened softly on Oct. 12 and officially a week later.

Although Ramsay sold Gordon Ramsay at the London West Hollywood to the hotel's operators in March, he remains "100% involved" with it and now with Boxwood, say reps for the restaurant. Ramsay operates another Boxwood Cafe in the Berkeley Hotel in Knightsbridge, London.

First American competes in Golden Spurtle World Porridge (a.k.a. oatmeal) Making Championship

Matt Cox's Oregon Orchard Oat Brulee will be the first ever American entrant in the Golden Spurtle World Porridge Making Championship in Scotland this Sunday.

To my mind, oatmeal is the most boring food on Earth. On its own, without nuts or raisins sprinkled in, it’s the equivalent of a blank canvas aching for paint. If you're into the conceptual, po-mo weirdness of bare walls and dudes sitting at pianos not playing a note, then oatmeal is probably the perfect food for you -- you and Oliver Twist. After all, gruel is only a tiny cultural leap away from its big-city cousin, oatmeal. When Dickens' titular orphan hero asks, "Please, sir, might I have more?" (I'm paraphrasing here), that's how we, as readers, are meant to understand how utterly wretched his life is. For God's sake, the boy is begging for oatmeal.

But if the culinary trends of the last decade have taught us anything, it's that one era's poverty food is another's gourmet treat. (In a world where millions starve to death, the privilege of being able to complain about oatmeal is not lost on me.) So this Sunday (which also happens to be World Porridge Day, a terrific event that helps feed children in some of the poorest countries around the globe), an international array of chefs who take oatmeal way too seriously will gather at the 16th Annual Golden Spurtle World Porridge Making Championship in Carrbridge, Scotland, where they’ll do their best to gussy up the tabula rasa of the breakfast world. And for the first and only time in the history of this storied oatmeal-cooking competition, an American entrant has stepped onto the field of battle.

The hopes, dreams and culinary pride of our nation rest on the shoulders of Matt Cox (of team Bob’s Red Mill), who will pit his Oregon Orchard Oat Brûlée against the best oats from around the world. Cox's signature oatmeal is a brûlée-topped wonder of steel-cut oats studded with a fruitful bounty of Oregon pears, cherries, hazelnuts and distilled spirits.

We don't know what odds the bookies have laid down, but Cox has the potential to blow the lid off the oatmeal world. You can cheer him on via Twitter or try the recipe that he spent months perfecting for yourself. Go, Team Oatmerica!

Clip_image002

Sunday brunch in the neighborhood: Allston Yacht Club, the friendly Echo Park neighborhood restaurant, has begun serving Sunday brunch from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The restaurant, known best for its  eclectic small-plates dinner menu and creative cocktails, will serve up tasty dishes including duck confit and sweet potato hash, biscuits and gravy, gravlax, organic house-made granola and yogurt and more. Need some hair of the dog? Try the AYC Ship to Shore bloody Mary, a classic Sazerac or mimosa. This new development should keep Echo Park locals from rushing to Silver Lake for their weekend-morning food fix. Allston Yacht Club, 1320 Echo Park Ave., Los Angeles. (213) 481-0454. www.allstonyachtclub.com.

Let them eat free cake! Simon Shin's hip Hollywood Korean barbecue restaurant, Shin, is celebrating its one year anniversary this month. To honor customers and generally make diners happy, the restaurant will be giving free "Shin Cake" to parties of four or more who have ordered the all-you-can-eat barbecue menu. (I recommend this option. At $25, it's a steal, and Shin's barbecue is particularly yummy, especially the beef short ribs.) "Shin Cake" is basically a green tea powder-infused rice flour pancake stuffed with cinnamon and brown sugar and topped with vanilla bean ice cream. Shin, 1600 Wilcox Blvd., Hollywood. (323) 465-4100. www.shinbbq.com.

Drink it up for Britney: Tonight only, if you are one of the lucky fans going to the Britney Spears concert at Staples Center, show your ticket to the folks at Magnolia downtown and get a free VeeV cocktail. Magnolia, 825 W. James Wood Blvd., L.A. (213) 362-0880.

Back on the Beach is, indeed, back on the beach in Santa Monica

Annenberg-Community-Beach-H After closing for almost 18 months of renovations, Back on the Beach Cafe has re-opened. It's now part of the Annenberg Community Beach House and reportedly has a new chef and a new (but certainly not uncommon) commitment to local farmers market produce. Its phone lines are currently on the fritz but a message confirms that the restaurant is now open from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. daily and that it will begin serving dinner sometime next week.

Calls to the restaurant have not yet been returned (probably because the phones are not working), but stay tuned for additional information.

Small Bites: Renovated Hotel Erwin in Venice to open Hash restaurant and High lounge; Terranea Resort in Rancho Palos Verdes opens eight restaurants

Erwin-roof--2

Eat your hash, then get to high: Hotel Erwin in Venice Beach has been open for about 30 years, but last year came under the management of the boutique hotel chain Joie de Vivre. Now, the hotel is revealing its new look (to fit in with the artsy, boho Venice milieu). But most important, for my purposes at least, Hotel Erwin is opening a new restaurant and a rooftop lounge. Hash restaurant is slated to open July 3 for breakfast and begin serving dinner on July 7. In the morning, the restaurant will serve a number of specialty breakfast hashes and dishes with playful names such as snooze-you-lose omelets. During dinner service, Hash will take on a bit of a French bistro air and serve dishes including red beet ravioli and spiced Kurobuta pork chops. The hotel's snazzy rooftop lounge, High, officially opens Friday night. A hotel spokeswoman says the open-air lounge and terrace is the highest rooftop space in Venice Beach and has 360-degree views from Catalina Island to the Hollywood sign. There won't be much food, just a bar menu of light snacks, including salami and oysters of the day. The drink menu includes artisan beers, wine and fresh cocktails with names such as Windward Ho and Lifeguard's Lemonade. 1697 Pacific Ave., Venice Beach. (310) 452-1111; www.jdvhotels.com/hotels/erwin.

Octohotel: Terranea Resort in Ranchos Palos Verdes has opened eight new dining and drinking destinations: the upscale Mar'sel, which features ocean views and a menu of California classics with French and Spanish accents; Nelson's, which is being dubbed "a 21st century homage to a modern surf shack"; the relaxed, family-friendly Catalina Kitchen; the poolside Terranea Grill, featuring upscale bar food; classy lounge spaces with club chairs, fireplaces and sofas (the Lobby Bar, Living Room & Terrace); the Spa Cafe with light, healthful fare; Sea Beans coffee shop; and finally, the casual Cielo Point, which is next to the "adults-only pool." 6610 Palos Verdes Drive South, Rancho Palos Verdes. (310) 265-2800; www.terranea.com.

Farmer's Kitchen opens in Hollywood

Market

If your reaction to all that fresh produce for sale at the Hollywood Farmers' Market is that you just wish someone else would cook it for you, you're in luck. The Farmer's Kitchen opened Sunday, and will do just that.

Customers wandered in Sunday, trying the menu of grilled polenta, sauteed greens, eggs and fruit compote. A full plate was $8. Television personality Huell Howser was among those who came for the cafe's "soft opening." There was no sign out front, just fliers at the market information table.

For now, the hours are Sundays from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Tuesdays to Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The cafe has been in the works for years, and is run by the same nonprofit that runs the market, Sustainable Economic Enterprises of Los Angeles. In addition to serving meals, customers can buy dried fruit, vinegar and other products made by the market's farmers. The cafe also will be the site of job-training and nutrition education programs.

Cafe Nine opens on 9th floor of Crocker Building

French toast made with Hawaiian bread that's battered, coated in Cap'n Crunch and drizzled with butterscotch sauce. Credit: Elina Shatkin / Los Angeles Times. When we stumbled upon Charles "Captain Chuckie" Hsieh's food cart in early January (on his first day in business, no less), it was a treat just to find pulled pork within walking distance of The Times building. Since then, things have moved fast for Hsieh. After two months parked in an empty storefront in the Crocker Bank Building and three additional weeks dishing out his signature pulled pork sliders on Hawaiian buns at the Downtown Independent Theater, Hsieh quietly opened Café Nine on the ninth floor of the Crocker Building (also home to the Crocker Club).

A dining guide for USC and UCLA grads

Waiter

Graduating from college is kind of a big deal.

After four or more years of midterms and finals, Mom, Dad, and every other relative in the western United States will want to see little Josephine Bruin or little Tommy Trojan shake the dean's hand and move that tassel from right to left.

The big question is: how to feed them all after the ceremony and into the weekend?

We picked 10 restaurants, with a variety of price ranges and cuisines, where UCLA and USC graduates and their families can celebrate a well-deserved brunch or dinner. (And thank goodness that true-blue and cardinal-red blood need not be shed in a battle over one of these restaurants: USC’s graduations begin this weekend on Friday, and UCLA’s are not until mid-June.)

So, class of 2009, after you toss your hats, get ready to fill your bellies:
