Great dishes take planning, but sometimes you can make something really good almost by accident. Sunday morning breakfast, prowling the fridge for something to make: We’ve got some mixed berries. There’s some leftover waffle batter. And there in the corner? A jar of jasmine-flavored simple syrup.

Yeah, I hear you, how accidental could that be? Honestly: I’d made it a week ago for a fruit salad and stored the leftovers. In the summer, I try to always have some flavored syrups in the fridge. They’re so easy to prepare and just half a cup can transform the blandest box of berries into something really special.

So, 1-2-3, with a topping of lightly sweetened goat’s milk yogurt. Sunday morning saved.
