A starlit sky, the California moon, an evening of food and wine and a "spud mixologist." Call it a date night at club owners and restaurateurs Guy Starkman and Darren Dzienciol's new venture, Sherbourne, which opens tonight in West Hollywood. The restaurant is nestled behind Jerry's Famous Deli on Beverly Boulevard, also owned by Starkman.

The small 50-seat, open dining room lined with dark wood panels and plush leather booths is centered around a ficus tree, part of the indoor-outdoor atmosphere. Architect John Sofio's design is part woodsy log cabin, part cozy chic dining room under the stars.

Executive chef Keven Alan Lee, previously of East in Hollywood and Lutece in Las Vegas, offers a menu of classic American cuisine, with a few signature twists thrown in. Highlights include the New Orleans-style prawns with black pepper and rich barbecue sauce; savory onion funnel cake with fondue; and the 24-hour spice-brined double-cut kurobuta pork chop, served standing with potato-less goat cheese gnocchi and wild berry Cognac.

Unique to the restaurant is the whipped potato bar. Instead of bread and butter to start the meal, a "spud mixologist" visits each table with a cart of whipped potato offerings and an array of toppings. Diners can top their whipped parsnips, purple potatoes and sweet potatoes with their choice of garnishes, such as Oreo cookies, brown sugar, savory bacon and fried sage or a drizzle of truffle oil.

327 N. Sherbourne, West Hollywood, (310) 289-5942.
