Soba workshop: On July 10, Tortoise in Venice is teaming up with Sonoko Sakai, food writer and cook, to teach a summer soba class for beginners at the Abbot Kinney studio. From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Sakai will show attendees how to knead the dough and prepare dipping sauces. The class is $95 per person. For more information, visit tortoisegeneralstore.com. 1208 Abbot Kinney Blvd., Venice, (310) 314-8448, tortoisegeneralstore.com.

Hot, hot, hot! The Oxnard Salsa Festival--featuring all things spicy and fiery--takes place July 30 and 31. Salsa lovers would do well to flock to Oxnard for the two-day event to sample an estimated 60,000 different salsas dished up by local restaurants, Mexican markets and gourmet salsa vendors. Can you take the heat? For festival information go to oxnardsalsafestival.com or call 805-247-0197.

Gastro-truck dinner: The “Hatchi Truck Stop” series at Breadbar’s Century City location features a new food truck chef each month. This month’s guest--the fourth in the gastro-truck series--is Flatiron Truck. On June 30, diners can line up from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. for eight featured small plates, priced at $8 each. Over the next few months guest trucks like Frysmith, Gastrobus and Nom Nom Truck are expected. 10250 Santa Monica Blvd., L.A., (310) 277-3770, breadbar.net.
