Dine like an emperor at the Getty Villa

The J. Paul Getty Museum is hosting "At the Roman Table: A Culinary Adventure at the Getty Villa." The July 16 event is to begin with a lecture by food historian Andrew Dalby exploring the dining practices in the time of Gaius Julius Caesar, and the powerful role food played at Caesar's feasts and entertainments as a means to impress, persuade and seduce in the political realm.

Dalby's talk is to identify the fashions –- wines, local produce, exotic spices and place settings -– that made for an elaborate dinner party 2,000 years ago. Following the talk, Sally Grainger, chef, food historian and consultant, is to present a four-course menu showcasing her in-depth research of the only surviving ancient Roman recipe book, "Apicius."

The featured menu will combine sweet and spicy, with dishes typical of a celebratory feast, including oysters, calf's kidney, suckling pig and a honey-infused cake. The history lesson and four-course dinner are $75 per person. The picturesque view is free. Reservations are available at www.getty.edu or by phone at (310) 440-7300.
