Cinco de Mayo fiesta recipes: guacamole, margaritas and more
Check out this recipe*** from the L.A. Times Test Kitchen for a great big bowl of chunky, garlicky guacamole, which gets a kick from a few serranos. And we've got recipes for three margaritas: guava, grapefruit and a blood orange jalapeño. And there's more: Just check out this photo gallery featuring 23 recipes that would be perfect at any Cinco de Mayo.
Now, we're not saying that you shouldn't hit the bars with friends to celebrate this Cinco de Mayo. 'Cause, frankly, that's exactly where I'll be. But friends don't let friends buy store-bought guacamole. And there's nothing better than a margarita made from scratch. (In case you are wondering, I like a traditional margarita on the rocks, plenty of salt.)
You simply must have these recipes available in your culinary arsenal whether you are throwing your own Cinco de Mayo fiesta or want to host a Mexican themed affair later this summer. This is Southern California, after all, and avocado season is upon is. There's always a reason to break out the guacamole and chips.
***This guacamole recipe calls for a fancy lava stone mortar and pestle, which is widely available at Latino markets and some cookware stores. But we promise that the food police won't break down your door if you just use a bowl and a fork.
