Local-food advocate Joan Gussow on ‘Growing, Older’

Local-food advocate Joan Gussow is embarking on a speaking tour that will bring her to California, New York, Connecticut, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Ohio in support of her new memoir, ‘Growing, Older: A Chronicle of Death, Life, and Vegetables.’

In the new book, she cries for the future of the planet but also finds herself disturbingly not in mourning over the death of her husband of 40 years, the artist Alan Gussow.

She was 68 when he died, and she writes: ‘For most of those 40 years, I lived a truly happy life. The surprise was that so little of my happiness had depended on Alan.’
