Jo Marie e-mailed me recently looking for the recipe for Fudgy Wudgy Brownies from our Culinary SOS archive:
‘I have been looking for the Fudgy Wudgy Brownies recipe since I left California. This was in the paper -- late 70s/early 80s and I lost all my favorite recipes when I moved. I know it’s a long time ago but my children are still asking!! Perhaps you could make me a hero??’
We tracked this recipe all the way back to its printing on July 20, 1978. The recipe is from songwriter Carol Connors, who made them for a Bastille Day potluck at famed Hollywood restaurant Le Dome. We wrote that the Academy Award nominee ‘stood by her Fudgy Wudgy Brownies assuring all the tasters that they were great because she sang to them. And they were.’
If you’re not much of a singer, no worries -- the recipe doesn’t call for vocal talents. But if a gooey-soft texture is your idea of a perfect brownie, this is sure to be a hit.

Carol Connors’ Fudgy Wudgy Brownies 4 squares unsweetened chocolate
1/2 cup butter or margarine
2 cups sugar
4 eggs, beaten
1 cup sifted flour
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup coarsely chopped walnuts
1 (6-ounce) package chocolate pieces
Melt the chocolate and butter over hot water. Cool slightly. Gradually add sugar to eggs, beating thoroughly after each addition. Blend in chocolate mixture. Stir in flour. Add vanilla, and half the nuts and chocolate pieces. Spread into a greased 9-inch square pan. Sprinkle remaining chocolate pieces and nuts over batter. Bake at 325 degrees for 30 minutes. Remove and cool in pan. Cut into squares.
