The inside scoop on food in Los Angeles

Your morning cup of nostalgia: Mmmmm. Squirrel soup.

Squirrel
Squirrel-soupth Did you happen to misplace your recipe for squirrel soup?

Well then, you're in luck.

I found this recipe from August 1975 in the L.A. Times archives. It begins with the instructions to "Wash and quarter three or four good sized squirrels ... " and ends with a self-congratulatory note that the dish is "very good."

Luckily, we were writing about squirrel soup -- not actually eating it.

The recipe was republished from a collector's item, a 1905 cookbook about food served at the White House. It was quite the comprehensive cookbook, according to this article, because it also included details on how to preserve brooms and remove pesky black paint.

How contaminated are local squirrels? VERY. Petrol, poisons, and garbage are in the foods they eat.
They are no more disgusting than any meat you eat. If you think otherwise, then you lack information.
We are no less contaminated by our foods.

Why is it that every disgusting thing somebody wants people to try "tastes like chicken"? Rattlesnake- tastes like chicken! Frog legs- tastes like chicken! Pidgeon- tastes like chicken! It's never beef or pork. I don't get it.

Call me unsophisticated, but squirrel soup is a little too exotic for me!

I've never had it, but this week we're cooking Canadian for our Global Table Adventure and they eat some might interesting items - like bear. Course my meal will be a little more "tame" :)

I actually grew up eating "Squirrel Muddle," gasp! It's an old Southern dish popular in Virginia and Georgia, often referred to as Brunswick Stew. Guess what, it tastes just like chicken!

Gross and just nasty! Talk about a health hazard. Yuck!!!!!

Keep you hands away from squirrels !!!
