A new happy hour at Cana Rum Bar

My favorite place to enjoy a daiquiri is at the far end of the island of St. John, preferably on the patio of a hillside house in Calabash Boom with a view of Tortola and Virgin Gorda. To get there, you take a flight to St. Thomas, via Miami, shuttle across the island, take a ferry to Cruz Bay, rent a Jeep, pick up some rum, limes and sugar at the market, and drive to the Coral Bay side of the island.

If I had it my way, I’d spend the day at Leinster Bay and paddle out to my favorite snorkel spot, Waterlemon (not Watermelon) Cay, a tiny island where I’d swim with nurse sharks and turtles and peacock flounder and avoid the occasional barracuda. By cocktail hour I’d be back in Calabash Boom with a daiquiri in hand, taking in the view.

But here I am in downtown Los Angeles, and the nearest best place to get a daiquiri is at Caña Rum Bar, which has launched a new happy hour. Bar manager Allan Katz has added some new cocktails to the menu, some of them with bourbon, gin or tequila. But most of the 10 cocktails on the list are rummy, such as the Jamaican Sparkplug, with dark Jamaican rum, lime, ginger, bitters and a little fizz. Also on the menu are a daiquiri and a couple of variations; the Honeysuckle, for example, has silver rum, honey and lime.

They’re all $6 each, and Caña Rum Society membership (regularly $20 a year) is included in the price of the first cocktail during happy hour.

I might order one of those Honeysuckles, sit on Caña’s patio underneath the downtown sky and dream about Waterlemon Cay.

Caña Rum Bar at the Doheny, Petroleum Building, 714 W. Olympic (first entrance south of Olympic on Flower), Los Angeles. Caña is open 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. Tuesday to Saturday (closed Sunday and Monday). Happy hour is all night Tuesday and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday to Friday.
