Beards take Manhattan

It was a big night for New York in New York Monday as restaurants in Manhattan came away with five of nine major honors at the 2010 James Beard Foundation Awards.

Tom Colicchio of Craft, which also has a branch in Los Angeles, was named outstanding chef, Daniel Boulud’s Daniel was outstanding restaurant, Keith McNally of Balthazar and several others was outstanding restaurateur, Jean George earned outstanding wine service and Marea was named best new restaurant.

Northern California also did well as Nicole Plue from Redd in Yountville was named outstanding pastry chef, John and Doug Shafer from Shafer Vineyards won the outstanding wine and spirits award and Timothy Hollingsworth of the French Laundry was named rising star chef.

Southern California was blanked as David Kinch of Manresa in Los Gatos was named best chef, Pacific, ahead of local favorites Matt Molina from Mozza and Michael Cimarusti from Providence. Suzanne Goin of Lucques had also been nominated for outstanding chef.

The Beard Cookbook Awards were presented Sunday night.
