James Beard Foundation announces cookbook awards

“The Country Cooking of Ireland,” by former Los Angeles Times contributor Colman Andrews, was named the best cookbook of the year Sunday night by the James Beard Foundation, and Ojai author Anna Thomas also won an award for her “Love Soup” in the Healthy Focus category.
In all, the Beard Foundation presented awards in 11 cookbook categories. The restaurant awards will be presented Monday night at the group’s annual gala at New York’s Lincoln Center.
The books selected by the Beard Foundation were almost entirely different from the books chosen by the International Assn. of Culinary Professionals less than a month ago.
The only books honored by both groups were “Ad Hoc at Home,” by Thomas Keller with Dave Cruz, which was selected in the General category, and ‘The Fundamental Techniques of Classic Pastry Arts,’ by the French Culinary Institute, which won in Cooking From a Professional Point of View.
Andrews’ best-book winner on Irish cooking wasn’t even a category finalist in the IACP competition, and the same was true for that group’s best book, Rose Levy Beranbaum’s “Rose’s Heavenly Cakes,” in the Beard awards.
