Marche in Sherman Oaks to shutter
Closings: Squid Ink reports that Marche in Sherman Oaks is closing next month. Its last day will be May 8. The restaurant, which was formerly Max, opened in September. Under the helm of chef Gary Menes, it received two-and-a-half stars from Times restaurant critic S. Irene Virbila. "We've got a core of extremely loyal customers, but it just hasn't been enough," owner Andre Guerrero, who also owns the Oinkster in Eagle Rock and BoHo in Hollywood, told S.I. 13355 Ventura Boulevard, Sherman Oaks, (818) 784-2915, www.marche-la.com.

I am honestly not surprised at all that Marché is closing: the prices were just way too high. Anyone can drive out west to Culver City and eat at Fraiche or downtown and pig out at Lazy Ox for half the price of what they were charging here. I mean the food was good, but $4 for a half-strip of bacon? Good riddance, if you ask me.

A great review of this place just came out in Westways. I was so excited to try it. Better head over there right away.

As a travel writer, i am amazed by the number of quality restuarants, with great chefs and followings that fail, while crappy restuarants continue to operate and make money. Marche was a great local restuarant for Sherman Oaks, a wealthy area. I think this is a case of poor marketing and publicity, combined with bad luck and im sorry to see it go, as will everyone in the area.
