Earth Day equals free salad at Mixt Greens (and hope for our planet)
Earth Day is April 22. It's also the one day a year when everyone pretends to think about the health of the planet while generally doing something Earth-unfriendly (like driving a car to work, using a Styrofoam cup or spraying their curled bangs super high with aerosol Aqua Net -- wait no, the latter was just me in fifth grade, way before Earth Day). But that doesn't mean that you can't change your ways this year. Ride your bike or take the bus to work and get yourself a tasty meal of salad at Mixt Greens. The eco-friendly restaurant is offering a free tote bag full of green goodies to the first 150 customers who arrive at one of its two L.A. locations on Earth Day. Inside the bag you'll find recipes from chef Andrew Swallow's upcoming cookbook, "Mixt Salads," a salad and packets of herb seeds to plant in your kitchen garden (you do have one of those, right?). 350 S. Grand Ave., L.A. (213) 587-7970. 5757 Wilshire Blvd., (213) 587-7975. www.mixtgreens.com.

The green cause is really gaining ground. It is even but time to draw green line on the streets for bicycles. This is a great way to promote sustainable transportation initiatives.

It is really great to do something different this time. It would be best to walk and look at a horizon and do something eco friendly.

Glad to see new healthy restaurants like Mixt Greens. When you are on the westside check out Greens Up! Salads Olympic and Sawtelle (11301 W. Olympic). It beats Mixt Greens hands down. Wish the Times would give it a review. They are opening another store soon in Santa Monica on Montana Ave.

You were in 5th grade before 1970?
I was surprised when I recently learned that Earth Day has been around for 40 years now, as I'm sure many people are. Sometimes it seems nobody ever cared about the earth before Al Gore came along. This site shows eco events all over LA, and not just on Earth Day. I live by it. http://www.gotogreenla.com/ And no, I don't work for them. :-)
