A call for punch recipes: RumDood.com and Malo Cantina announce their first live punch competition, sponsored by Kraken rum. Punches must be original recipes containing the classic five elements: sugar, spices (or bitters), citrus, water and a high-proof spirit (it need not be rum). Punch recipe entries must be submitted by Monday to contests@rumdood.com or rhachel@sbcglobal.net. The top six submitted punch recipes will be selected by Rhachel Shaw of Malo and Matt Robold of RumDood.com to participate in the live punch party/contest at Malo on Dec. 10. (Contestants or a representative must be able to attend the live competition.) Malo will provide punch bowls, ice and any ingredients needed other than homemade ingredients and rare liqueurs. Contestants will compete for prizes for “Most Popular Punch,” voted on by all attendees, as well as “Judges’ Favorite,” voted on by a panel of judges. The winner of the “Most Popular Punch” will receive $150. The winner of the “Judges’ Favorite Punch” takes home $500. The contest will be open to the public. Stay tuned for ticket information. Malo, 4326 Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles, (323) 664-1011, www.malorestaurant.com.
