Locali to pedal frozen treats with Icycle

May 7, 2009 |  5:22 pm

Locali's snow conesLocali, the "conscience convenience" store that opened in January on Franklin Avenue near Beachwood Canyon, will soon be peddling -- or is that pedaling? -- its frozen snow cones around town on a custom-built adult tricycle. The Icycle joins a slew of mobile food vendors like Kogi, Coolhaus, Let's Be Frank and the Green Truck that are adding a gourmet touch to the food-on-wheels scene, bringing everything from frou-frou hot dogs to architecturally themed ice cream sandwiches to Angelenos.

Beginning May 25, the Icycle will sell Locali's house-made snow cones sweetened with brown rice syrup or diabetic-friendly Xylitol in flavors such as banana, mango, cherry cola, grape, pumpkin, coconut, cinnamon and key lime pie. It will also offer a selection of frozen treats potentially including frozen vegan cheesecake, individually-sized containers of farmers market favorite Carmela's ice cream, vegan ice cream sandwiches, Popshop's exotic popsicles and more.

The Icycle will be powered by Locali employee Mike Giambra, the man responsible for the store's popular Log Cabin Croissant breakfast sandwich: a butter croissant topped with smoked chicken, sliced apples and Swiss cheese then drizzled with maple syrup and served "all warm and melty." (Yes, that is official gourmet-speak.)

The tricycle has been ordered and is on its way to Los Angeles, Locali's owners Melissa Rosen and Greg Horos tell me. It should be built and ready to go by Memorial Day. More details and pictures to come.
