Killjoy news: Red meat is bad for you

Red_meat

Sorry to be the bearer of this nugget of bad news out of Washington:

Eating red meat increases the chances of dying prematurely, according to a large federal study offering powerful new evidence that a diet that regularly includes steaks, burgers and pork chops is hazardous to your health.

What do you make of this study? Is it enough to make you rethink dinner? Are you trying to incorporate more vegetarian fare into your diet?

And now, for some good news: Check out the ever-growing list of recipes from The Times' Test Kitchen, available at latimes.com/recipes. There, you'll find plenty of vegetarian dishes, as well as some veggie-rich salads and seafood. (You might not even notice that the meat is missing.)

Here we go again, good 'ol humans with their uneducated and narrow-minded "at least I'M happy" attitudes. Hey, that's all that matters, right?!

If you are going to eat meat, educate yourselves about not only the health risks of eating meat but also about the horrific meat industry as well.

At the VERY least, demand the humane treatment of the animals that you are eating!!! You have the responsibility to learn about the consequences (to the animals and the environment) of a meat-based diet. It's not enough anymore to say, "I don't want to know".

Let's teach our children for a better (and more sustainable) tomorrow!

I'll never give up beef or pork. I love cooking it, I love ordering it in restaurants, and if I live a shorter life because of it... then at least I'll have died HAPPY.

I do need some fresh ideas for veg though, so I'll definitely try out some recipes. The "Frico with fennel-apple slaw" looks fantastic.
