Thursday night, we ran into Eastside mogul-of-hip Mitchell Frank at the Echo’s holiday party. He was good enough to tell us that El Prado, the low-key Echo Park bar that he co-owns, just received its wine license and will start serving wine in the very near future.

We love El Prado (which is located across the street from the Echo) for many reasons -- its lack of a TV, its dim light, its good vinyl, its charcuterie -- but we especially love it because it has managed to take something with potential pretentious pitfalls (fancy beer) and make it into a really unpretentious experience. We asked Frank if he promised to pull off the same miraculous stunt with wine, and he assured us that he would. There will be a unique, carefully selected group of wines offered each evening. But that’s where the frills end.
