The Stork flies again, sort of. As we reported back in October, Amanda Scheer Demme is back on the scene with a new nightspot called H-wood in the former Stork space (near the Roosevelt Hotel). Last night, we popped in, only to find out that H-Wood has been quietly open for a few weeks now.

Scheer Demme, along with Loyal Pennings and John Terzian, were present Thursday evening (former Stork minder Grace Fernandez has moved on to another bar), and the space has been beautifully transformed from its short-lived previous incarnation. Gone are the austere post-industrial feel and sconces so harsh you thought you might be in a warehouse. In its place? Cozy leather couches everywhere, soft lighting, chess boards, a faux-library below a staircase (partially pictured here) and more. All tastefully done, and all decidedly ‘adult.’

The crowd Thursday was eclectic, and Scheer Demme said she wants to make H-Wood a true destination for artists of all kinds. Judging from the relaxed crowd, it looks as if she is on her way to cultivating something warm in a neighborhood known for just the opposite. (How long she can keep it that way is another matter.)

Think Tribeca, not Hollywood, despite the unfortunate ‘H-Wood’ moniker.
