Though he swore “I shall never dance again” during a daring 2010 live onstage dance-off with Conan O’Brien and Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert once again displayed his strong dancing chops on his show Wednesday night with guest David Hallberg, the American Ballet Theatre principal dancer who recently became a premier dancer with Moscow’s legendary Bolshoi Ballet.

After Colbert girded Hallberg about being a Soviet defector (“Stephen, the Cold War is over,” Hallberg deadpanned back), Colbert returned from a commercial break, ostensibly introducing Hallberg in a “Nutcracker” interlude, yet then quickly emerged from the wings himself wearing black tights and slippers beneath his suit jacket.

With his glasses bouncing along on his nose, the nervy talk show host joined Hallberg in a series of challenging beats, traveling fifth-position sautés and tour-en-lair spinning jumps. “Dancing With the Stars” anytime soon, Stephen?
