‘Ghost: The Musical’ coming to Broadway in spring

Get your pottery wheel spinning and turn up the volume on ‘Unchained Melody.’ The new stage musical version of the hit 1990 movie ‘Ghost’ is opening on Broadway in April.

‘Ghost’ is expected to start performances in March and to officially open some time in April. (No actors or theater have been announced yet.) The musical is penned by Bruce Joel Rubin, who won an original screenplay Oscar for the movie. Dave Stewart, of the band the Eurythmics, co-wrote the score with songwriter-producer Glen Ballard.

‘Ghost’ opened in London earlier this season in a production directed by Tony-winner Matthew Warchus (‘God of Carnage.’) That production stars Caissie Levy and Richard Fleeshman as Molly and Sam -- the characters played by Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze in the movie.

Sharon D. Clarke plays the character of Oda Mae Brown, a fraudulent psychic. Whoopi Goldberg won an Oscar for playing the role in the movie. (All together now: ‘Molly, you in danger, girl.’)

According to reviews, the musical invokes the pop song ‘Unchained Melody’ at several points. The song served as a recurring motif in the movie, most memorably in a scene involving a pottery wheel, a lump of clay and a whole lot of sexual innuendo.

The reviews also said that the musical utilizes multimedia special effects to create the ghostly version of Sam.
