The Dude, a.k.a. Gustavo Dudamel, may be shaking his disco-merengue groove thing this weekend when he steps in to conduct the Los Angeles Philharmonic in a three-song program with Los Amigos Invisibles Friday and Saturday night at the Hollywood Bowl.

As reported earlier on our sister blog Pop & Hiss, Dudamel and his wife Eloisa Maturén have been friends for many years with the Caracas-bred funkmeisters, who now make their homes in New York and Miami. The band will be performing as part of the program ‘En Fuego: Voices and Guitars,’ an 8:30 p.m. concert on Friday and Saturday night that also includes the Mexican guitar virtuoso duo Rodrigo y Gabriela.

Los Amigos Invisibles will perform three songs with Dudamel and the L.A. Phil -- ‘Amor,’ ‘La Vecina’ and ‘Ponerte en Cuatro’ -- and two by themselves. For the remainder of the program, the Phil will be led by scheduled guest conductor Miguel Harth-Bedoya, who graciously agreed to yield the floor to Dudamel for a few minutes, according to the Phil.

A Phil spokesperson, Lisa Bellamore, said Thursday afternoon that Dudamel and his Invisible Friends had been in touch recently and decided to join forces onstage at the Bowl. ‘I don’t know who initiated the idea,’ Bellamore said. ‘As you know, they have a very close relationship and I think they were communicating with each other and it just came up.’
