Hospitalized before a show at the Melbourne International Jazz Festival Thursday night, 83-year-old saxophonist Lee Konitz has canceled his appearance Sunday at the Playboy Jazz Festival. Already performing at the festival Saturday night with the Roots, trumpeter Terence Blanchard will perform with his band in Konitz’s place.

Konitz’s recent live album with Brad Mehldau, Charlie Haden and Paul Motian was released earlier this week, and he was set to make his festival debut at the Hollywood Bowl with his New Quartet. Details on Konitz’s condition were not immediately available. In the meantime, enjoy a very cool nine minutes with the ageless Konitz in an improvisation with pianist Dan Tepfer above.
