When Kim Cattrall starred last year in a West End production of Noel Coward’s ‘Private Lives,’ audience and critical reaction was so overwhelmingly positive that it was all but inevitable that the play and its leading lady would transfer to New York.

On Wednesday, organizers announced that ‘Private Lives’ will open Nov. 17 at the Music Box Theatre for a limited engagement through Feb. 5. Cattrall will reprise her role as Amanda, an elegant divorcee who runs into her ex-husband, Elyot (Paul Gross), while honeymooning in France.

Richard Eyre will direct the play, as he did in London. The production will have a limited run at Toronto’s Royal Alexandra Theatre before beginning previews on Broadway on Nov. 6. (In the London production, the role of Elyot was played by Matthew Macfadyen, who won’t appear in Toronto or on Broadway. Gross is a film and theater actor, with many stage credits in Canada.)

Cattrall, who played the libidinous Samantha Jones in ‘Sex and the City,’ has acted in a number of British stage productions in recent years, including David Mamet’s ‘The Cryptogram’ and a Liverpool production of Shakespeare’s ‘Antony and Cleopatra.’

The last Broadway revival of ‘Private Lives’ was a 2002 production directed by Howard Davies and starring Alan Rickman and Lindsay Duncan.
