'War Horse': an early look at Steven Spielberg's film

June 29, 2011 | 11:24 am

"War Horse," the Tony-winning British stage import, has become one of the hottest tickets on Broadway, prompting its producers to extend the show's run indefinitely at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre at Lincoln Center. The play's transcontinental popularity will no doubt help sell tickets for Steven Spielberg's film of the same name, which is expected to open in late December.

War HorseDreamWorks and Touchstone Pictures have released the trailer for the Spielberg movie, which you can watch in the above video. While the stage production of "War Horse" uses life-size puppets to depict its four-legged characters, the movie uses real horses -- and perhaps their CGI equivalents, too.

Both the film and the stage play are based on the 1982 Michael Morpurgo novel of the same name. It's unclear whether or not the movie borrows anything from the play. (Spielberg is reported to have seen the stage drama in London.)

The movie stars Jeremy Irvine in the lead role of Albert, a young man who ends up taking care of a stallion named Joey. (On Broadway, the role of Albert is played by Seth Numrich.) The film also features Emily Watson, David Thewlis and Niels Arestrup.
