Valentine's Day countdown: Trumpeter Wynton Marsalis' favorite love song
From now through Valentine's Day we're sharing the favorite love song from eight musicians who are about to perform in the Los Angeles area. Today, Wynton Marsalis selects “Embraceable You” by George and Ira Gershwin.
"I like this song because it fundamentally states what is required for a romance to blossom."
(Another Gershwin classic, "An American in Paris" is on the bill this weekend when Marsalis and Jazz at Lincoln Center join the Los Angeles Philharmonic for a concert at Walt Disney Concert Hall.)
First, here is Nat King Cole's 1961 recording. And then watch as Marsalis uses the song for a Master Class in improvisation.
A conversation: Wynton Marsalis swings for the fences
The trumpeter and composer performs with Jazz at Lincoln Center Saturday, Sunday and Tuesday at the Walt Disney Concert Hall.
Check back with Culture Monster every day through Feb. 14 for a new selection.
