Grammy Awards: James Moody, Stanley Clarke among Grammy winners in jazz

Grammy Award voters may not have gone with the most adventurous choice in honoring the late, great saxophonist James Moody in the jazz instrumental album category, but they probably made the right one. Moody, who died of pancreatic cancer in December at age 85, was honored for his rich collection of ballads, ‘4B,’ besting fellow nominees Vijay Iyer, Danilo Perez and John Beasley for his first and long overdue Grammy win.

Other winners included Dee Dee Bridgewater in the jazz vocal category, the Stanley Clarke Band in the contemporary jazz album category and Herbie Hancock in the best improvised jazz solo category. Chucho Valdés also was honored in the Latin jazz category.
