Philharmonic Society of Orange County announces 2011-12 season

The Philharmonic Society of Orange County is announcing on Thursday its 2011-12 season, which will include appearances by major orchestras including the New York Philharmonic (with Alan Gilbert), the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (with Riccardo Muti), the Cleveland Orchestra and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.
The season kicks off with concerts by the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra (Oct. 13 and 17) led by conductor Valery Gergiev in a salute to the 120th anniversary of the opening of Carnegie Hall. The concerts will feature works by Tchaikovsky, including his Symphonies Nos. 2 through 5.
Chicago’s recently appointed music director Muti will lead the CSO in a concert (Feb. 17, 2012) that will include Honegger’s ‘Pacific 231,’ Franck’s Symphony in D minor and ‘Alternative Energy’ by Mason Bates.
The St. Petersburg State Symphony Orchestra will continue the Philharmonic Society’s Carnegie Hall celebrations with a concert (March 13, 2012) of Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite, the Ravel orchestration of Mussorgsky’s ‘Pictures at an Exhibition’ and Sibelius’ Violin Concerto in D minor, Op. 47, with violinist Mikhail Krutik.
Conductor Marin Alsop will make her Orange County debut leading the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra in a concert (March 28, 2012) featuring Aaron Copland’s ‘Fanfare for the Common Man,’ Joan Tower’s ‘Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman,’ Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 5 and Jennifer Higdon’s Percussion Concerto.
The Cleveland Orchestra will perform a concert (April 17, 2012) that will include Mendelssohn’s Scottish Symphony, Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 6 and a new work by Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho called ‘Orion.’ Conductor Franz Welser-Möst will lead the orchestra.
Violinist Joshua Bell will perform with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields in a concert (April 26, 2012) that will include Beethoven’s Coriolan Overture, Violin Concerto in D major and Symphony No. 7 in A major. Bell will also serve as the guest artistic director of the 2012 Laguna Beach Music Festival, Feb. 6-12. The Los Angeles Philharmonic will return to Orange County (April 28, 2012) with conductor Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos to perform Turina’s Danzas Fantásticas, Op. 22, and Brahms’ Symphony No. 2. The program will also include Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez, featuring guitarist Pepe Romero.
Conductor Gilbert and the New York Philharmonic will appear in Orange County (May 8, 2012) as part of their first tour together of American cities. The concert will feature Debussy’s ‘La Mer,’ Ravel’s ‘La Valse,’ Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3, with pianist Yefim Bronfman, and Berlioz’s Le Corsaire Overture.
All of the orchestral performances will take place at the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall in Costa Mesa. Tickets will go on sale in June.
The season will also include recital and chamber performances by pianist Marino Formenti (Jan. 7, 2012), the Brentano String Quartet (Feb. 11, 2012), the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio (Feb. 23, 2012), the Takács Quartet (March 20, 2012) and tenor Charles Castronovo (Apr. 1, 2012), who is an alumnus of Cal State Fullerton and who recently performed the title role in ‘Il Postino’ at Los Angeles Opera.
