From the visual arts to theater to classical music to architecture, 2010 was filled with big drama (both on and off stage), big money and big personalities on the L.A. arts and cultural scene. Here’s our list of the top 10 cultural stories of the year, starting with The ‘Ring’ cycle at Los Angeles Opera. Click on the photo gallery at right to see the rest.

L.A. Opera’s bold, expensive production of the ‘Ring’ cycle culminated in May and June with three full performances of the Wagner tetralogy. Ticket sales for the $31-million staging were weaker than expected, contributing to a nearly $6-million deficit for the production. On top of that, the two lead singers voiced dissent over director Achim Freyer’s unconventional interpretation of the operas and raised safety concerns regarding the perilous stage.
