Steven Soderbergh’s new Spalding Gray documentary coming to LACMA

The new Steven Soderbergh documentary about the late Spalding Gray will have its local premiere at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the museum said Monday.
‘And Everything is Going Fine,’ directed by Soderbergh, is the latest in a line of documentaries dedicated to the verbose theater artist. Previous documentaries starring Gray were ‘Gray’s Anatomy,’ ‘Monster in a Box’ and ‘Swimming to Cambodia.’
The new film will screen at LACMA Dec. 13 at 7:30 p.m. Bernardo Rondeau, the coordinator of the museum’s film program, said it is the only public screening of the documentary scheduled in L.A. so far. The movie will be released commercially by IFC Films in New York on Friday and on-demand on Dec. 22.
Gray became famous for his on-stage monologues in which he explored aspects of his life and acting craft. He was an original member of the Wooster Group, the experimental New York theater company now headed by Elizabeth LeCompte.
The group is currently performing ‘Vieux Carré,’ at REDCAT in downtown L.A. through Dec. 12. The production, a multimedia deconstruction of the Tennessee Williams play, is expected to open in New York in 2011.
In 2004, Gray was presumed to have committed suicide after his body was discovered in New York’s East River. (The 62-year-old writer-actor was reported missing two months earlier.) Gray sometimes talked about his psychological problems, and his mother’s own suicide, in his theatrical monologues.
‘And Everything is Going Fine’ consists of performance and interview footage that Soderbergh has put together to create a portrait of the late artist.
